The eyeliner has a smooth, creamy texture that slides on easily and quickly sets to a slightly tacky finish. The tackiness doesn’t get in the way of this product’s ability to wear without smearing or fading, although the “micronized clay” from the Amazon River is mainly hype. Clay won’t have an effect on how well eyeliner lasts, although it can help absorb excess oil.

Among the shades, stick with Black, Brown, and Bronze for classic eye designs. The blue and green shades are more trend-driven and do little to shape or shade the eye, but depending on the look you’re after (and your profession) you may find them appealing.

  • Like most gel eyeliners, the formula wears beautifully and lasts all day.
  • Creamy formula is easy to apply and won’t smear once set.
  • Rich colors don’t require multiple coats for a dramatic effect.
  • Expensive considering the average price for gel eyeliners is around $15.
  • The Amazonian clay angle is silly because, regardless of its source, clay doesn’t affect the positive traits gel eyeliners have.

Note: tarte’s Amazonian Clay Waterproof Liner formerly came with a brush, but we’ve since been informed by a reader that this is no longer the case. We confirmed this to be true, and that the eyeliner brush is sold separately for $15. This is still a well-rated liner and one we recommend—but it was a true beauty steal with the brush included. (We hope you took advantage of that deal while it was offered!)

Tarte Cosmetics At-A-Glance

Tarte Cosmetics CEO and founder Maureen Kelly started Tarte in 1999, out of a desire to create a cosmetics line that “would prove that glamour can be good for you.” This comes in the form of products that highlight naturally-derived ingredients in their marketing campaigns, and occasionally taking swipes at the concept of synthetics in makeup.

This is ironic, as Tarte uses more than a few beneficial synthetically derived ingredients in their formulas—silicones, synthetic fragrances, preservatives and on and on. However, we’ll forgive them that as what’s ultimately important is whether their products meet your needs, and to that we can say the brand excels in many areas at what they do.

However, a few products are a bit on the pricey side and there are a few iffy shades and textures to consider among their foundations—noted in their respective reviews. A few caveats aside, most of Tarte's foundations, blush options, eye pencils and an ever-expanding range of innovative products demonstrate that color is what they do best.
