Brazilliance Plus + Self-Tanner is excellent at delivering a bronze faux glow that won't leave you looking orange, but the formula and its skincare claims aren't all they're cracked up to be.

The first thing you'll notice about this self-tanner is how dark-brown (almost black) the gel-lotion looks upon application. The benefit is that the dark tint helps you easily see where you've applied the self-tanner, so you can avoid streaks and mistakes as you're blending. The tint looks a little off-putting at first, but rest assured that once it has time to settle, the color develops into a natural-looking tan.

Unfortunately, the skincare claims of the formula end up being a major disappointment. For instance, Tarte's claim of the citric acid exfoliating skin is off-base because the amount of citric acid is too low to provide this benefit.

The bigger issue is the fragrance, which Tarte refers to this as "scent control technology" designed to offset the tell-tale self-tanner smell. The problem? Fragrance is a known skin irritant, and the risk it presents to skin isn't worth the trade-off. See More Info for details.

All in all, even though this self-tanner does its bronzing job, you're better off checking out our recommendations for top self-tanners that omit fragrance here.

  • Delivers natural-looking tan color (not the least bit orange).
  • Dark tint allows you to easily see where you've applied the self-tanner, so you can avoid streaks and mistakes.
  • The high amount of fragrance detracts from the skincare benefits.

Why Fragrance Is a Problem for Skin:

Daily use of products that contain a high amount of fragrance, whether the fragrant ingredients are synthetic or natural, causes a chronic sensitizing reaction on skin.

This reaction in turn leads to all kinds of problems, including disrupting skin's barrier, worsening dryness, increasing or triggering redness, depleting vital substances in skin's surface, and generally preventing skin from looking healthy, smooth, and hydrated. Fragrance free is always the best way to go for all skin types.

A surprising fact: Even though you can't always see or feel the negative effects of fragrant ingredients on skin, the damage will still be taking place, even if it's not evident on the surface. Research has demonstrated that you don't need to see or feel the effects of irritation for your skin to be suffering. Much like the effects from cumulative sun damage, the negative impact and the visible damage from fragrance may not become apparent for a long time.

Tarte Cosmetics At-A-Glance

Tarte Cosmetics CEO and founder Maureen Kelly started Tarte in 1999, out of a desire to create a cosmetics line that “would prove that glamour can be good for you.” This comes in the form of products that highlight naturally-derived ingredients in their marketing campaigns, and occasionally taking swipes at the concept of synthetics in makeup.

This is ironic, as Tarte uses more than a few beneficial synthetically derived ingredients in their formulas—silicones, synthetic fragrances, preservatives and on and on. However, we’ll forgive them that as what’s ultimately important is whether their products meet your needs, and to that we can say the brand excels in many areas at what they do.

However, a few products are a bit on the pricey side and there are a few iffy shades and textures to consider among their foundations—noted in their respective reviews. A few caveats aside, most of Tarte's foundations, blush options, eye pencils and an ever-expanding range of innovative products demonstrate that color is what they do best.
