Smashbox describes its Studio Skin 24 Hour Waterproof Concealer as a "magic wand" for its ability to make imperfections disappear. While it's not quite a fairy godmother when it comes to dark circles and spots, it has enough going for it that you'll still look beautiful at the ball!

This comes in the standard liquid concealer packaging, a clear plastic tube with a sponge-tip applicator. The texture is lightweight yet creamy, yielding medium coverage initially that you can build to full coverage without looking cakey. Nice!

The fragrance-free formula dries to a soft satin finish that works well for normal to combination skin; those with very dry skin or dry skin around the eyes might find this not emollient enough.

This does a good job of covering dark circles, areas of patchy skin or redness, along with bumps or clogged pores. It doesn't fade throughout the day, although we don't recommend wearing it the labeled 24 hours because sleeping in your makeup is always a bad idea!

Even better: Smashbox included a couple of skin-beneficial ingredients in the formula, including sodium hyaluronate and the antioxidant vitamin E. Smashbox also provides a number of natural-looking shades suitable for fair to deep skin tones.

This didn't earn our top rating because it creases noticeably under eyes as the day wears on. That's not as much of an issue if you use powder over it, and you can easily buff out these creases, but if you're using this primarily to cover dark circles it's something to consider.

  • Medium to full coverage that doesn't look cakey.
  • Doesn't fade throughout the day.
  • Includes some skin-beneficial ingredients.
  • Good range of shades.
  • Fragrance free.
  • Creases noticeably under eyes throughout its wear time.

Smashbox At-A-Glance

Two interesting things about Smashbox are that its name refers to the early, accordion-style cameras and that Smashbox is first and foremost a Hollywood-based photography studio. The company's creators, Dean and Davis Factor, have their heritage in makeup—their great-grandfather was the legendary makeup artist Max Factor. The makeup, which debuted in 1996, began as a collection of trendy and fashion-forward colors coupled with a pleasingly neutral palette of foundations, concealers, and powders. Nowadays, there are exceptional options to choose from, but also some color products that fall short due to too sheer formulas or other issues noted in their respective reviews.

Where Smashbox has lived up to their Hollywood makeup pedigree is with a few standout formulas, including impressive lip products as well as excellent foundations, BB and CC cream options. Of course, the brand is also well-known for their range of makeup primers—whether that’s a necessary step is up for debate—but nevertheless they do offer a few products in this category that are worth considering.
