Smashbox Photo Finish Hydrating Under Eye Primer is a luminous white primer for under the eyes claims to reduce the look of fine lines, puffiness, wrinkles, age spots, and dark circles. While its claims may be a bit over the top, it is a very good formula that includes a range of antioxidants, anti-irritants and cell-communicating ingredients. In fact, you can look at this more like an anti-aging eye cream than a primer in the traditional sense.

Photo Finish Hydrating Under Eye Primer is a silky, serum-like texture that blends easily into the skin, providing a temporary illuminating effect. However, this effect will not be apparent once foundation or concealer is applied over it, nor will it leave shimmer or glitter behind (which is a good thing). As a primer, this provides a superficial buffer—like any good primer should—that keeps makeup from slipping into fine lines and wrinkles.

While you don't need a separate product for the eye area, this is a very good one to consider if you decide to splurge on an extra for your beauty routine. Not only is the texture quite pleasant, but it also supplies a nice mix of beneficial anti-aging ingredients to the eye area (or anywhere else on the face).

Pros:
  • Subtle illuminating effect.
  • Silky texture blends easily.
  • Includes antioxidants and skin-identical ingredients.
  • Fragrance-free.
Cons:
  • Pricey.

Brand Overview

Smashbox At-A-Glance

Two interesting things about Smashbox are that its name refers to the early, accordion-style cameras and that Smashbox is first and foremost a Hollywood-based photography studio. The company's creators, Dean and Davis Factor, have their heritage in makeup—their great-grandfather was the legendary makeup artist Max Factor. The makeup, which debuted in 1996, began as a collection of trendy and fashion-forward colors coupled with a pleasingly neutral palette of foundations, concealers, and powders. Nowadays, there are exceptional options to choose from, but also some color products that fall short due to too sheer formulas or other issues noted in their respective reviews.

Where Smashbox has lived up to their Hollywood makeup pedigree is with a few standout formulas, including impressive lip products as well as excellent foundations, BB and CC cream options. Of course, the brand is also well-known for their range of makeup primers—whether that’s a necessary step is up for debate—but nevertheless they do offer a few products in this category that are worth considering.
