If you're on the hunt for an ultra-fine brow filler, Smashbox's Brow Tech Matte Pencil is likely to catch your eye. While this super slim pencil has its high notes, including the flattering range of blonde and brunette shades, the fact that the soft cream texture never fully sets means you can end up smudging any of these shades by accident—not a desirable quality in any brow product.

Upon initial application, we found this texture easy to work with—it's a breeze to blend and correct any mistakes. But therein lies its problem: The texture simply isn't tenacious enough for worry-free wear. Granted, if you don't touch your brows throughout the day you'll be fine, but it's surprisingly easy to graze them by accident and not realize it (until you look in the mirror). The smudging issue is most noticeable on those with sparse brows, where extra product application is needed.

On the plus side, we appreciate the twist up design (rather than a 'needs sharpening' pencil), and the spoolie brush at the opposite end of the pencil works for polishing off the look. The natural way it leaves brows—soft and flexible rather than matted down or waxy—is also a nice touch.

We would've loved to recommend Brow Tech Matte Pencil for those with light blonde brows in particular, due to the soft, neutral color of the Blonde and Taupe shades, but again, the probability of smudging is a gamble we're not advising you to take.

While this is just a so-so pencil to consider, we'd be remiss not to mention that Maybelline's Define-A-Brow offers an almost identical design but with better results…for a fraction of the price! Or, you can check out our other top-rated brow fillers here.

Smashbox At-A-Glance

Two interesting things about Smashbox are that its name refers to the early, accordion-style cameras and that Smashbox is first and foremost a Hollywood-based photography studio. The company's creators, Dean and Davis Factor, have their heritage in makeup—their great-grandfather was the legendary makeup artist Max Factor. The makeup, which debuted in 1996, began as a collection of trendy and fashion-forward colors coupled with a pleasingly neutral palette of foundations, concealers, and powders. Nowadays, there are exceptional options to choose from, but also some color products that fall short due to too sheer formulas or other issues noted in their respective reviews.

Where Smashbox has lived up to their Hollywood makeup pedigree is with a few standout formulas, including impressive lip products as well as excellent foundations, BB and CC cream options. Of course, the brand is also well-known for their range of makeup primers—whether that’s a necessary step is up for debate—but nevertheless they do offer a few products in this category that are worth considering.
