Smashbox's original, creamy Be Legendary Lipstick did so well that the brand added matte finish shades in a completely new formula that promises "adherence power." It isn't as long lasting as your average matte lipstick, but as a nice compromise Be Legendary Lipstick – Matte applies comfortably smooth and continues to feel creamy for the duration of wear. Simply put, you get the matte finish look without the drying feel.

As per usual with Smashbox's lipsticks, the shade range includes attractive options to complement most skin tones. The colors go on creamy and opaque and deliver full-bodied color. We did notice that the light yet bright shade "Paris Pink Matte" looked chalky on lips and emphasized flakiness so avoid that shade if you have perpetually chapped lips. For the rest of the shades however, you get smooth, even coverage that lasts a couple to a few hours depending on how much snacking and sipping you do in between.

By the way, the subtle vanilla flavoring of this formula doesn't present an issue for lips in terms of potential irritation, and is only hardly detectable. As for the vitamins C and E, which Smashbox added to boost lips with antioxidant properties, they're there, but in a minute concentration. Still, some is better than none!

In the end, Be Legendary Lipstick – Matte is worth considering if you're in the market for a matte finish lipstick without the drying, ultra-absorbent feel—just don't count on it to hold up as long as the average matte lip product.

  • Has a matte finish yet feels comfortably creamy and smooth.
  • Shades offer full-bodied and even coverage.
  • Non-irritating formula.
  • If you're looking for long wear, this isn't that kind of matte lipstick.
  • "Paris Pink Matte" shade looks chalky on lips.

Brand Overview

Smashbox At-A-Glance

Two interesting things about Smashbox are that its name refers to the early, accordion-style cameras and that Smashbox is first and foremost a Hollywood-based photography studio. The company's creators, Dean and Davis Factor, have their heritage in makeup—their great-grandfather was the legendary makeup artist Max Factor. The makeup, which debuted in 1996, began as a collection of trendy and fashion-forward colors coupled with a pleasingly neutral palette of foundations, concealers, and powders. Nowadays, there are exceptional options to choose from, but also some color products that fall short due to too sheer formulas or other issues noted in their respective reviews.

Where Smashbox has lived up to their Hollywood makeup pedigree is with a few standout formulas, including impressive lip products as well as excellent foundations, BB and CC cream options. Of course, the brand is also well-known for their range of makeup primers—whether that’s a necessary step is up for debate—but nevertheless they do offer a few products in this category that are worth considering.
