If you've got discolorations to hide, chances are your concealer wish list looks like this: natural-looking yet full coverage, a long-wearing formula that holds up through humidity and perspiration, and must not feel like spackle on your face. Well, it seems Smashbox Cosmetics must have been listening, because those are exactly the qualities we found in their 24 Hour CC Spot Concealer! This fragrance-free formula excels when it comes to hiding red marks, brown spots and blemishes.
Housed in a tube with a wand that closely resembles a liquid liner applicator, this incredibly light, fluid concealer delivers in both the long-wearing and full coverage departments. Its water-thin texture makes it an ideal formula for those with normal, oily or combination skin (including the acne-prone).
Smashbox recommends on the packaging instructions to shake before use, as this can separate otherwise. You can apply it directly to skin using the tip of the wand, or defer to a small-tipped concealer brush. We should note that the immediate full coverage provided by this formula means a little goes a long (LONG) way—a pin-sized dot was more than enough to cover a pea-sized red mark.
Once applied, this dries to a matte finish quickly, allowing about 5-10 seconds for you to work with it before it sets. We were impressed at how well this held up over the course of the day; it didn't fade a bit after 8+ hours of wear, and even held up for one staffer through a 5-mile morning run—yet it washes off easily with a standard water-soluble cleanser.
We should note that Smashbox recommends 24 Hour CC Spot Concealer not be used around the eye area, which we absolutely agree with. Its matte finish was far too drying for the eye area (even on staffers with very oily skin), and the high-degree of coverage looked unnatural.
What about those shades? Smashbox provided a pleasing range of eight options that cover those with very fair to deep skin tones. The lightest three shades are quite neutral, if not a bit cool (meaning pink), while the medium to deep shades are neutral to warm (gold) in undertone. All are exceptional, and we didn't find an overly yellow or too-pink option among them.
As a nice bonus, Smashbox also included antioxidants and anti-inflammatory ingredients such as lecithin, vitamin C (as tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate), cucumber and licorice root extracts. It's possible that this combination can have some benefit in reducing redness and complimenting your well-formulated skincare routine in helping speed the healing time of discolorations resulting from breakouts. This is a very nice extra benefit to an already excellent concealer.
All included, Smashbox 24 Hour CC Spot Concealer is a standout among full-coverage concealers due to its exceptionally lightweight texture, natural finish, and tenacious wear time. Though the fill weight is smaller in comparison to other concealers, the fact that you need such a tiny amount of product per use means that one tube should go far!
Two interesting things about Smashbox are that its name refers to the early, accordion-style cameras and that Smashbox is first and foremost a Hollywood-based photography studio. The company's creators, Dean and Davis Factor, have their heritage in makeup—their great-grandfather was the legendary makeup artist Max Factor. The makeup, which debuted in 1996, began as a collection of trendy and fashion-forward colors coupled with a pleasingly neutral palette of foundations, concealers, and powders. Nowadays, there are exceptional options to choose from, but also some color products that fall short due to too sheer formulas or other issues noted in their respective reviews.
Where Smashbox has lived up to their Hollywood makeup pedigree is with a few standout formulas, including impressive lip products as well as excellent foundations, BB and CC cream options. Of course, the brand is also well-known for their range of makeup primers—whether that’s a necessary step is up for debate—but nevertheless they do offer a few products in this category that are worth considering.
