Peter Thomas Roth's Pore Putty makes the claim of "clinically diminishing the look of pores over time", but you'll see as soon as you apply this that pores and fines lines look less obvious—talk about instant gratification! Although this product isn't the perfect solution for visible pores and wrinkles, it absolutely works to temporarily fill and blur their appearance, and as a bonus helps keep excess shine in check, at least for a couple hours.
Best for combination to oily skin, the fragrance-free formula contains several skin-smoothing silicones, some of which have a powder-like finish that nicely contribute to this product's smoothing and filling effect. The formula is tinted, but the tint is extremely sheer and neutral, dissipating almost immediately. It doesn't show up—not even on fair skin tones—nor does it affect the color of your makeup.
Pore Putty's matte finish looks fresh and dimensional, not flat or drying—though it feels dry to the point that someone with dry or dehydrated skin will want to make sure to apply this last, over a moisturizer or foundation suitable for their skin type. (But then again, those with truly dry skin rarely complain about also having large pores.)
Peter Thomas Roth added diamond powder and the mineral pigment mica to this formula and while both enhance this product's finish with a soft luminescence, they don't add visible sparkles to skin. That's good, because if you have oily skin chances are you don't want to make it look even more shiny!
You can apply Pore Putty under or over makeup. If applied under makeup, presumably on top of a daytime moisturizer with SPF, it should be gently dabbed (not rubbed) on skin so as not to disrupt the sun protection. The "dab don't rub" advice is also worth following if you opt to apply this on top of makeup to avoid rubbing off your coverage—we found it worked best and added a bit to its wear time using this method.
Pore Putty goes beyond smoothing and mattifying skin by virtue of including some intriguing repairing and cell-communicating ingredients. In theory, these could have an influence on skin's oil production and possibly reduce the inflammation behind breakouts, but this product earned its rating due to its exceptional performance as a specialty "blurring" product that works as claimed to reduce the appearance of pores and wrinkles. Sadly, there isn't any substantiated research to support Roth's claims of long-term pore improvement, but that's a minor disappointment considering all this does so well.
One more comment: This product's only drawback (well, unless you were hoping for long-term pore reduction) is that it can ball up and roll when dabbed over some types of foundation. Generally, if the foundation you prefer contains a high amount of silicones (ingredients like cyclopentasiloxane or dimethicone) the tendency for Pore Putty to ball up increases. It's not a deal-breaker, just something to be aware of.
Peter Thomas Roth At-A-Glance
Peter Thomas Roth is a large but straightforward line with mostly uncomplicated formulations that, for the most part, are quite good and state-of-the-art. Unlike many product lines, most of the acne, AHA, BHA, sunscreen, and moisturizing products contain what they should to be effective and helpful for skin.
Even more impressive are the well-formulated cleansers, sunscreens, AHA products, and skin lighteners. The moisturizers have improved somewhat, and most are now packaged so that the light- and air-sensitive ingredients remain stable. In fact, Roth's packaging deserves special mention because it is exceptionally utilitarian.
After all that glowing praise, what you should be aware of are the instances of products containing potential irritants (noted in their respective reviews) as well as the products in jar packaging that contain ingredients which are sensitive to air and light.
