This is a good moisturizing mask whose main drawbacks are that the formula is strikingly similar to many of the moisturizers in Olay’s Regenerist line plus the fact that the jar packaging means several key ingredients will begin to break down and lose effectiveness shortly after this is opened. See More Info for details on why jar packaging isn’t the way to go for products like this.

The water-based, gel-cream texture definitely hydrates and smoothes, just like many moisturizers. Olay added a couple of novel plant extracts not found in some of their other products, but their presence is more for show than effect because of the aforementioned jar packaging. Otherwise, it’s status quo, so this isn’t a must-have product for your routine, though in better packaging this is fine for times when those with normal to dry or combination skin needing extra hydration.

  • Silky texture hydrates and smoothes.
  • Rich in cell-communicating ingredient and skin tone-improving niacinamide.

  • Jar packaging won’t keep several of this mask’s light- and air-sensitive ingredients stable once opened.
  • Doesn’t distinguish itself from several Olay Regenerist moisturizers, all of which can be used as a moisturizing mask, too (just apply a bit more than usual).

More Info:

The fact that this product is packaged in a jar means the beneficial ingredients won't remain stable once it is opened. All plant extracts, vitamins, antioxidants, and most other state-of-the-art ingredients break down in the presence of air, so once a jar is opened and lets the air in, these important ingredients begin to deteriorate. Jars also present a hygiene issue because even if you wash your hands or use a spatula to remove the product, you’re introducing bacteria, which cause further breakdown of key ingredients (Sources: Free Radical Biology and Medicine, September 2007, pages 818–829; Ageing Research Reviews, December 2007, pages 271–288; Dermatologic Therapy, September-October 2007, pages 314–321; International Journal of Pharmaceutics, June 12, 2005, pages 197–203; Pharmaceutical Development and Technology, January 2002, pages 1–32; International Society for Horticultural Science, and www.actahort.org/members/showpdf?booknrarnr=778_5).

Wake up with hydrated skin for a bright, pearlescent, healthy look with this Overnight Mask.  Unlike a typical peel-off mask, this gel containing vitamin B3, Mulberry extract, and humectants absorbs into the surface of the skin throughout the night.  This formula works overnight at the surface cell level to even skin tone over time.

Olay At-A-Glance

Starting decades ago with the now-classic Oil of Olay, this brand now offers an extensive range of skin-care products sold at drugstores and mass-market stores. Today's Olay lineup for those concerned about staving off the effects of aging skin is impressive, comprising their Regenerist, Pro X, and Total Effects lines. All of these (and several other Olay products) contain the B vitamin niacinamide. As you might expect, the claims made for it are inflated, but niacinamide is a very helpful ingredient for all skin types, capable of exerting multiple benefits.

In fact, perhaps the biggest complaint about Olay is that there are a number of repetitive formulas within and between the sub-brands make this line confusing and tricky to shop! Still, there is a lot to like about this drugstore stalwart, with its main drawback being a few formulas containing fragrance or other ingredients that have the potential to cause irritation.
