Regenerist Luminous Light Hydrating Face Lotion has a lightweight lotion texture that's suitable for normal to combination skin. Like almost all Olay moisturizers (and serums) this product contains the B vitamin niacinamide, which is their primary ingredient of choice for improving skin tone and dark spots . Just keep in mind that obtaining results is only possible if you're protecting your skin daily with a broad spectrum sunscreen rated SPF 30 or greater!

Housed in a sculptural opaque bottle topped with a pump, this dispenses easily and slips over skin, supplying it with some basic hydrating ingredients. The fragranced formula feels nice, but other than the niacinamide and a couple other token ingredients, it comes up short on anti-aging benefits.

The other two ingredients worth mentioning are glucoslyl hesperidin and an Olay-developed skin-brightening agent known as undecylenoyl phenylalanine.

The glucosyl hesperidin is a soothing, plant-derived antioxidant; undecylenoyl phenylalanine has research from Olay's parent company Procter & Gamble as well as other sources indicating there's promise for brightening dark spots (Sources: Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology, June 2014, pages 86-90; and The British Journal of Dermatology, June 2012, Supplement 2).

The problem? Research so far has shown that a 2% concentration of undecylenoyl phenylalanine is necessary for best results, yet we suspect this moisturizer contains far less than that.

Ultimately, you're getting a good-but-not-the-best lightweight moisturizer that will make skin feel refreshed and hydrated as claimed which improving skin tone and, perhaps, dark spots. See our list of Best Moisturizers and Best Skin-Lightening Products to help narrow your search.

  • Lightweight, silky formula leaves skin feeling smooth and refreshed.
  • Contains a potentially helpful amount of skin-brightening ingredients.
  • Packaged to keep key ingredients stable during use.
  • Could have been a more robust formula for improving dark spots.
  • Formula lacks an impressive mix of anti-aging ingredients seen in today's best moisturizers.
  • The fragrance poses a slight risk of sensitizing skin.

Olay At-A-Glance

Starting decades ago with the now-classic Oil of Olay, this brand now offers an extensive range of skin-care products sold at drugstores and mass-market stores. Today's Olay lineup for those concerned about staving off the effects of aging skin is impressive, comprising their Regenerist, Pro X, and Total Effects lines. All of these (and several other Olay products) contain the B vitamin niacinamide. As you might expect, the claims made for it are inflated, but niacinamide is a very helpful ingredient for all skin types, capable of exerting multiple benefits.

In fact, perhaps the biggest complaint about Olay is that there are a number of repetitive formulas within and between the sub-brands make this line confusing and tricky to shop! Still, there is a lot to like about this drugstore stalwart, with its main drawback being a few formulas containing fragrance or other ingredients that have the potential to cause irritation.
