Recently reformulated, Gentle Clean Foaming Cleanser (formerly Foaming Face Wash for Sensitive Skin) remains one of the best cleanser values at the drugstore and is ideal for all skin types, including extra sensitive and acne-prone.

With nearly identical ingredients, this cleanser retains most of its predecessor's positive qualities. The water-soluble, pearlescent formula is available in either a tube or pump bottle. It's fragrance free, gentle, removes most types of makeup, and rinses thoroughly, without stripping skin.

The aloe juice from the previous version is now listed in extract form and appears lower on the ingredient list; however, since aloe is 99.5% water (Indian Journal of Dermatology, 2008), this change isn't to blame for any perceived differences.

Gentle Clean Foaming Cleanser differs from its forerunner in one way worth mentioning: Because two foaming agents were removed (laureth-10 and disodium lauroamphodiacetate), the new version isn't quite as foamy. It can be worked into a foamy lather with wet hands, but takes slightly more effort than before. We don't see this as a deal-breaker, but if you loved that feature from the previous version, it might take some getting used to and some may find they want to seek out a cleanser that produces more foam.

  • Gentle formula ideal for all skin types, including extra sensitive.
  • Effectively removes most makeup.
  • Rinses thoroughly without leaving skin feeling dry or tight.
  • Beauty bargain.
  • Fragrance free.
  • Takes more effort to create a lather than previous version.

Olay At-A-Glance

Starting decades ago with the now-classic Oil of Olay, this brand now offers an extensive range of skin-care products sold at drugstores and mass-market stores. Today's Olay lineup for those concerned about staving off the effects of aging skin is impressive, comprising their Regenerist, Pro X, and Total Effects lines. All of these (and several other Olay products) contain the B vitamin niacinamide. As you might expect, the claims made for it are inflated, but niacinamide is a very helpful ingredient for all skin types, capable of exerting multiple benefits.

In fact, perhaps the biggest complaint about Olay is that there are a number of repetitive formulas within and between the sub-brands make this line confusing and tricky to shop! Still, there is a lot to like about this drugstore stalwart, with its main drawback being a few formulas containing fragrance or other ingredients that have the potential to cause irritation.
