Our experience with NYX Cosmetics Super Cliquey Matte Lipstick was hit and miss from the get go: it takes what feels like one hundred push-clicks (wow!) to prime the applicator to dispense. Halfway through that routine, we decided the applicator was no more than a gimmick—but then, its angled, teardrop shape created a precise, lasting cupid's bow without the aid of liner. The heavy, waxy texture is slightly uncomfortable, but—on the flip side—it doesn't transfer, even to a warm coffee cup.

This back-and-forth went on: there are no irritating ingredients in the formula, but it felt drying, because the first two ingredients are highly absorbent. It took some experimenting to find a shade that didn't highlight every bit of texture, every wrinkle and line on the lips. But there are a dozen colors to choose from, and we eventually had success (the darker shades are more forgiving).

What eventually tipped the scale was that the product broke down after three hours of wear: what began as an even, deeply-pigmented matte look suddenly switched to a cracked, patchy, chunky nightmare. Take a pass on this pro/con seesaw, and find your no-fail favorite among our top-rated, best lipsticks.

Pros:
  • Teardrop-shaped dispensing tip maintains a defined point for accurate application.
  • Dispenser releases a tiny amount of product per click—so there's no mess or waste.
  • Virtually no transfer, even from the darkest shades.
  • Fragrance free.
Cons:
  • Coverage is patchy, particularly in lighter shades.
  • Not long lasting.
  • Heavy, waxy texture.
  • Highlights every line on your lips.

Smashbox At-A-Glance

This small Los Angeles–based makeup line was founded in 1999 by a woman named Toni Ko. The company's Web site is vague about Ko's background, merely stating that she developed an interest in cosmetics as a teenager and wanted to create her own line of cosmetics. Ko's goal was to produce high-quality products at affordable prices, and that's the draw of NYX (pronounced "nicks") Cosmetics. We are pleased to report that, for the most part, Ko succeeded in her childhood dream.

It is important to note that this line offers a full selection of makeup products, from foundations to lip gloss. However, the only place to access everything NYX Cosmetics has to offer is their Web site. The Ulta chain is the largest distributor of NYX Cosmetics products in the United States, and the line can also be found at Target and Nordstrom Rack, but they carry a smaller selection of NYX products. The good news is that most of the few NYX products Ulta stocks are impressive, especially the powder eyeshadows, which compete evenly with eyeshadows that cost a lot more.

NYX Cosmetics website is www.nyxcosmetics.com.
