NYX's Butter Lipstick is a no-frills approach to lip color that's certainly not bad, but it does nothing to distinguish itself from any number of similar lipsticks out there. It does have some drawbacks.

Butter Lipstick comes in a tube that's a bit tricky to use. It looks like a standard twist-up lipstick tube, but the twist mechanism (that is, the base of the lipstick) is a bit "loose," so it's easy for the lipstick to twist up on its own while the cap's still on, such as being jostled around in your purse.

As for the lipstick itself, it's a basic cream formula that glides easily across lips, delivering full- color coverage with a couple of swipes. Its satin finish feels smooth on lips, though it's not exceptionally moisturizing as you might expect from a "butter lipstick." In fact, your lips will feel a little dried out once Butter Lipstick fades, which is about two to three hours into its wear time.

This lipstick comes in a good variety of shades, including some very dark and very light colors, but take care with the lighter ones because they emphasize lines and dry spots on your lips. Overall, this isn't a bad lipstick, but there are certainly better contenders in every price range out there!

One more comment: This fragranced lipstick contains small amounts of fragrance ingredients known to be irritating. The risk presented is low, but this isn't a lipstick for those who don't want fragrance right under their nose!

  • Creamy formula glides across lips.
  • Good color impact.
  • Attractive satin finish.
  • Twist-up mechanism on the tube is a bit loose, which means it can twist up easily while still capped (which can damage the lipstick).
  • Lips feel a bit dried out after the lipstick has faded.
  • Lighter shades emphasize lines and dry spots.

Smashbox At-A-Glance

This small Los Angeles–based makeup line was founded in 1999 by a woman named Toni Ko. The company's Web site is vague about Ko's background, merely stating that she developed an interest in cosmetics as a teenager and wanted to create her own line of cosmetics. Ko's goal was to produce high-quality products at affordable prices, and that's the draw of NYX (pronounced "nicks") Cosmetics. We are pleased to report that, for the most part, Ko succeeded in her childhood dream.

It is important to note that this line offers a full selection of makeup products, from foundations to lip gloss. However, the only place to access everything NYX Cosmetics has to offer is their Web site. The Ulta chain is the largest distributor of NYX Cosmetics products in the United States, and the line can also be found at Target and Nordstrom Rack, but they carry a smaller selection of NYX products. The good news is that most of the few NYX products Ulta stocks are impressive, especially the powder eyeshadows, which compete evenly with eyeshadows that cost a lot more.

NYX Cosmetics website is www.nyxcosmetics.com.
