Maybelline's Vivid Matte Liquid Lipstick isn't a liquid nor is it matte, but it does live up to its "vivid" name by offering richly pigmented color. While we love how comfortable the velvety, mousse-like texture feels, our disappointment resides in the fact that it never fully sets, leaving the color prone to transferring to whatever it comes in contact with. Vivid Matte Liquid Lipstick has some nice attributes, but there's room for improvement, particularly in terms of it being a matte lip product.
Here's the good news. Applied with the flat sponge tip applicator, Vivid Matte Liquid Lipstick glides on silky-smooth (not at all greasy), and a little goes a long way to impart rich, opaque color. You get smooth, comfortable wear for as long as it lasts (a few hours give or take—depending on your volume of eating and beverage sipping), and after the top layer wears off, an even stain of color remains.
The shade range offers a versatile mix of nude, pink, reds, and berry tones, as well as a couple of a deeper, trendier hues.
Here's where things get a bit iffy…As mentioned in our opening statements, this is not a matte lipstick—instead the finish retains a (non-shimmery) shine. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but if you're buying this in hopes of achieving a matte lip look with long-lasting staying power, you're going to be sorely disappointed. More to the point, we noticed a bit of feathering (more apparent with the ultra-vivid and deeply toned shades), alongside the aforementioned color transfer issue.
We also have to callout the perfume-like scent, which is annoyingly strong…to the point where we could taste it. That's bad enough on its own, but worse yet, the fragrant ingredients pose a potential risk of irritation for lips (see More Info).
In the end, we settled on an average rating for Maybelline's Vivid Matte Liquid Lipstick. Had it lived up to its "matte" name there would have been more hope for this product but as is, it falters more than it soars. There's no denying the rich shades are attractive—we just wish they had performed better.
Daily use of products that contain a high amount of fragrance, whether the fragrant ingredients are synthetic or natural, causes chronic irritation that can damage healthy collagen production, lead to or worsen dryness, and impair your skin's ability to heal. Fragrance-free is the best way for all skin types to go for all skin types (Food and Chemical Toxicology, 2008 & American Journal of Clinical Dermatology, 2003).
The sneaky part about irritation is that research has demonstrated that you don't always need to see it or feel it for your skin to suffer damage, and that damage may remain hidden for a long time (Skin Pharmacology and Physiology, 2008).
In fact, the effect of inflammation in the skin is cumulative, and repeated exposure to irritants contributes to a weakened skin barrier, slower healing (including of red marks from breakouts), and a dull, uneven complexion (Aging, 2012 & Chemical Immunology and Allergy, 2012).
Maybelline New York At-A-Glance
Strengths: At least one excellent product (if not several) in almost every category; many excellent foundations; superior mascaras; inexpensive makeup brushes; some terrific concealers, powders, blush, and lip color options.
Weaknesses: Lips balms tend to be a letdown; a few of the Great Lash mascaras are surprisingly average compared to other Maybelline formulas.

Wilson founded the company and named it after his sister, Mabel, and Vaseline (which he combined with coal dust to concoct a mascara for her), the company has prided itself on bringing innovative products to the marketplace. L'Oreal purchased the company in early 1996, and that's when things really started coming together for the Maybelline brand.
Specializing in a large selection of lipsticks, nail polishes, and mascaras, there is a lot to love from this drugstore brand. Many of their foundations are exceptional, and their powders, several mascaras, pencils, matte-finish concealers, and Superstay Lipcolor collection impressed us by offering a high degree of quality for their inexpensive price point.
Maybelline's latest urban image is a positive step, as many of their latest launches have been innovative without resorting to "been-there, done-that" gimmicks. Smart shoppers will note the similarities of a few of Maybelline’s formulas to products from high-end brands that are also owned by parent company L’Oreal. That just goes to show conscientious shopping can really save you money—without sacrificing quality or performance.
