Maybelline claims that Lash Sensational Luscious Mascara creates layers of dense lashes, and after applying, we agree—lashes really do look thicker from root to tip! Just know that if you're a fan of the original Lash Sensational Mascara, this version isn't as adept at creating the effect of cleanly defined lashes (i.e. expect some clumping). Nonetheless, for some, the noticeably more dramatic volume may be worth the tradeoff.
Lash Sensational Luscious Mascara comes with a straight, rubber bristle brush, which tapers at the end, making it easier to apply mascara along hard-to-reach areas, such as the inner corners and bottom lash line.
One coat delivers an appreciable amount of thickness, which you can build upon for a more dramatic, volumized lash look. The downside is that lashes begin sticking together with successive coats—not quite "spidery" lashes but somewhat clumpy. In addition to volume, you can also expect increased length.
In terms of durability, we experienced mixed results. During our weeklong trial process, we noticed occasional flaking, albeit only a minor amount. Likewise, on two of the days, we noticed slight smudging, but we attributed that to using an emollient eye cream (considering it didn't smudge on the days we hadn't applied eye cream).
By the way, this is a "tubing" mascara formula—the kind that breaks down in warm water (with help from a cleanser). Some people find this sort of removal easier, others not so much. Something everyone is likely to love? The formula is fragrance free, which is particularly good news for those with sensitive peepers.
So, should you buy Maybelline's Lash Sensational Luscious Mascara? If volumized lashes is your end goal and you don't mind some clumping to get there, perhaps. The added length is also a nice touch. We'd rank it as a respectable but not flawless mascara…not quite among Maybelline's best efforts, but close.
Lash Sensational Luscious Mascara comes in three shades: Blackest Black, Very Black, and Brownish Black.
Maybelline New York At-A-Glance
Strengths: At least one excellent product (if not several) in almost every category; many excellent foundations; superior mascaras; inexpensive makeup brushes; some terrific concealers, powders, blush, and lip color options.
Weaknesses: Lips balms tend to be a letdown; a few of the Great Lash mascaras are surprisingly average compared to other Maybelline formulas.
Maybelline is one of the best-known and most recognized mass-market makeup lines in the world—it's available in 90 countries. Throughout its long history, which began in 1915 when T. L. Wilson founded the company and named it after his sister, Mabel, and Vaseline (which he combined with coal dust to concoct a mascara for her), the company has prided itself on bringing innovative products to the marketplace. L'Oreal purchased the company in early 1996, and that's when things really started coming together for the Maybelline brand.
Specializing in a large selection of lipsticks, nail polishes, and mascaras, there is a lot to love from this drugstore brand. Many of their foundations are exceptional, and their powders, several mascaras, pencils, matte-finish concealers, and Superstay Lipcolor collection impressed us by offering a high degree of quality for their inexpensive price point.
Maybelline's latest urban image is a positive step, as many of their latest launches have been innovative without resorting to "been-there, done-that" gimmicks. Smart shoppers will note the similarities of a few of Maybelline’s formulas to products from high-end brands that are also owned by parent company L’Oreal. That just goes to show conscientious shopping can really save you money—without sacrificing quality or performance.
