The selling point for this liquid foundation with reliable broad-spectrum sunscreen is the “translucent pigments” that are said to offer a “personalized finish” influenced by your skin’s undertone. M.A.C. may well be using translucent pigments, but we suspect many other companies are as well, given how much better foundations look today than they did even five years ago.

M.A.C.’s claim is really just stating what any good foundation does when you find the right shade: It looks natural, melds with your skin, and matches your skin’s undertone (which is typically yellow-based), rather than masking it or playing up what you see on the surface (i.e., redness or a pink cast).

Claims aside, this is an excellent option. It has a fluid, silky texture and a smooth creaminess that is a pleasure to blend. The finish is natural matte and it gives skin a dimensional rather than flat quality—very attractive. Coverage is in the medium range, but as with other foundations that provide this level of coverage, it can be blended sheer; but, keep in mind that the more sheer it is, the less sun protection you get.

The formula is best for normal to slightly oily or combination skin, and it is fine for breakout-prone skin. The shades are quite good, especially those for fair to light and dark skin tones. In fact, the darker shades here are some of the best we’ve seen from M.A.C. Watch out for shade 6, which has a strong gold tone that won’t work for most medium skin tones, and shade 7, which is very peach. The other shades are recommended.

Note: This product was recently downgraded from 5-stars to 4-stars due to its less-than-optimal SPF rating. Although this does provide sun protection, it's less than SPF 30. The problem? Health experts and medical boards around the globe agree that SPF 30 or greater is best when it comes to providing a reliable defense against the damage the sun can do. Yes, a foundation with less than SPF 30 is acceptable if your daytime moisturizer is rated SPF 30 or greater, but we wouldn't want anyone thinking an SPF under 30 is the best for skin. See More Info below for details.

Pros:
  • Smooth, fluid texture is easy to blend.
  • Beautiful natural matte finish makes skin look dimensional, not dull.
  • Provides broad-spectrum sun protection with titanium dioxide for sufficient UVA protection.
Cons:
  • SPF 15 is below worldwide standards for optimum sun protection.

Sunscreens Rated Lower than an SPF 30: An extensive body of research and a growing number of medical organizations around the world have determined that a sunscreen rated SPF 30 or greater is mandatory to ensure adequate sun protection.

Although a sunscreen rated lower than 30 will provide protection at the SPF number on the label and may claim broad-spectrum protection, we always point out when it does not have a rating of SPF 30 or greater because that's so important for the health and appearance of your skin.

M.A.C. Cosmetics At-A-Glance

What more can one say for this long-standing makeup line whose products have spoken eloquently for themselves for years? In many ways, M.A.C. Cosmetics is a pivotal line not only for makeup artists but also for any in-the-know cosmetics consumer. Although M.A.C. has several singularly outstanding products, they generally excel by virtue of the range of choices offered. The color selection for everything from lipsticks to foundations is exceptional. Most of the makeup brushes are beautiful, full, and soft, as well as properly sized to fit the contours of the face and eyes.

When it comes to skincare you may be tempted to dismiss the small assortment M.A.C. offers and skip right to their makeup with its well-earned positive reputation. But doing so would mean missing a handful of beautifully formulated products that are worth trying. By no means is M.A.C.'s skin-care line one-stop shopping (at least not if you have blemishes, skin discolorations, or require more than a couple options per category), but you'll find more than just the color products impressive here, and the prices aren't unreasonable either!

M.A.C.'s salespeople are often trained makeup artists, too. This is especially true in the freestanding M.A.C. boutiques, where the staff tends to be true makeup artists.

Note: M.A.C. sets itself apart from other beauty brands by staying ahead of the curve by launching a seemingly-constant rotation of impressive limited edition products, usually with fashion-forward themes. Though it's impossible to review every limited edition product, many of M.A.C.'s are as impressive as those in their permanent collection.

Strengths: Some impressive moisturizers; praiseworthy foundations in a mostly gorgeous range of shades; good concealers; several great powder-based products including blush, bronzer, and eyeshadow in various finishes; dizzying array of lipstick shades in mostly sumptuous formulas; several very good mascaras (regular and waterproof); top-notch makeup brushes; many of the Prep + Prime products work as claimed.

Weaknesses:A few products with high levels of potential skin irritants.
