Effaclar BB Blur Instant Oil-Absorbing Coverage Cream Mousse impressed us from the first squeeze out of the tube with its unique whipped texture that blends effortlessly into skin, blurring pores and other imperfections as it goes. The fragrance-free, silicone-based formula is particularly great for oily skin due to its lightweight, mousse-like consistency that lightly mattifies shine, but it also has just enough emolliency to please those with normal to combination (or slightly dry) skin as well. Our only complaint is that we wish it came in more shades!

Effaclar BB Blur goes on too sheer to cover more noticeable imperfections (i.e. deeply pigmented blemishes or dark spots), but its sheer to light coverage evens out the complexion in a natural-looking way. More to the point, the blurring effect really does help soften the appearance of pores and even fine lines to a minor degree. As for the claim that it keeps skin matte all day—that won't hold up if you have very oily skin, but you will at least get temporary shine control and this won't make your skin oilier.

Of the two colors offered, we can only speak for the Light/Medium shade since that's the only one the stores we visited carried (Fair/Light is offered online). Upon first impression, it appeared to be a tad overly warm in tone, but once blended into skin the color sheered out to a flattering, medium-light skin tone. The color and light coverage remained true over the course of the day.

In the end, there's a lot to love about Effaclar BB Blur Instant Oil-Absorbing Coverage Cream Mousse, from how amazing it feels on skin to its ability to temporarily mattify shine/blur the look of pores. It delivers a "your skin but better" appearance and if you can nab a shade that matches your complexion, we highly recommend it!

La Roche-Posay At-A-Glance

L'Oreal-owned La Roche-Posay has a pharmaceutical lineage based in France, and the company speaks of their thermal spring water as the cornerstone of their commitment to dermatological skin care. In fact, the name La Roche-Posay comes from the French town that is the source of this water, which is said to be a rich in selenium. While selenium is an element that has potent antioxidant ability, it's unclear how much the water La Roche-Posay uses contains, since all water has to go through purification processes to be to used in cosmetic products.

That aside, this brand does have a number of standout products, including some good sunscreens and anti-aging treatments. Another positive: All of its skincare is packaged in containers that will keep beneficial products protected from light and air (no jar packaging here!). Unfortunately there are some missteps, namely that some otherwise-excellent products include potentially-irritating amounts of alcohol, fragrance, or other irritants. The line could also benefit from additional products that contain more state-of-the-art ingredients. Still, for a no-frills approach to serious skin care, there are some finds to be had!
