Kevyn Aucoin's The Lip Gloss, like most of the brand's makeup offerings, doesn't come with lofty claims about how it's different from other glosses on the market. Instead, it's a straightforward approach to lip gloss that has many positive aspects—but one that has a couple of issues that keep it from reaching the highest tier of products we recommend.

The Lip Gloss comes in a small, clear tube with a sponge-tipped wand applicator. The sponge tip is rounded rather than slanted like most are, which actually makes application easier (you can get more gloss on your lips from a single swipe). The gloss itself has an emollient, almost balm-like texture that glides on like a dream and doesn't feel sticky. There is a somewhat citrus-like fragrance initially, but it fades very quickly. Still, it's something to keep in mind if you prefer your lip products to be fragrance-free.

An interesting thing we noticed immediately after applying this gloss is that it has a slightly gritty texture at first. With sparkle shades that can sometimes come with the territory (what you're feeling is the micro-glitter), but we found this to be the case even with shades that didn't have any obvious sparkle. The grittiness goes away as the gloss wears on, but it's definitely something we wanted to point out.

As far as the finish goes, The Lip Gloss provides soft shine in a variety of attractive colors that range from sheer to opaque (Kevyn Aucoin's site describes which shades are sheer and which are't). It wears well (as long as you're not eating) for about three or four hours without bleeding (standard for a gloss formula), and leaves lips feeling moisturized once it's faded away.

Overall, The Lip Gloss isn't the very best among Kevyn Aucoin's products (and there are some true standouts!), but it does have enough going for it that if you're interested in this makeup-artist inspired line, it's worth a look.

  • Round sponge-tip applicator makes application easier.
  • Balm-like texture isn't sticky.
  • Comes in a variety of attractive colors.
  • Lips feel moisturized once the color fades.
  • Gloss contains fragrance (though it dissipates very quickly).
  • Even the non-glittery shades have a somewhat gritty texture initially.

Brand Overview

Kevyn Aucoin was arguably one of the most iconic makeup artists of the 20th century. A self-trained, highly sought celebrity makeup artist and best-selling author, his work appeared regularly in countless fashion magazines, as well as his monthly column in Allure. Not surprisingly, his work has influenced countless makeup artists and YouTube beauty vloggers—whether they know it or not—and at the time of his passing in 2002, he had just launched a small range of products under the Kevyn Aucoin brand. Although Aucoin left us far too soon, at least his products serve to compliment his lasting legacy.

Today, the Kevyn Aucoin brand continues with his motto that anyone should be able to experiment with makeup and feel beautiful while doing so. The brand's range of unique products reflects the emphasis on makeup’s role in our lives as more than just utilitarian—it should be enjoyable, accessible, fun, and the outcome always rewarding. The approach is enhancing one’s self-esteem rather than using makeup to cover up what you or others might perceive as unattractive.

Thus, the products themselves are something of an experience to use—from their packaging (beautiful) to their focus on perfecting skin and mix of basic to bold color options. This line isn’t for those who think of makeup as a chore!

The price points are higher, to be sure, but there are also quite a few exceptional and unique standouts that allow this brand to nicely distinguish itself in a sea of makeup artist-fronted lines. There are some shortfalls here and there, but overall, it is a range that is well worth experimenting with should you happen upon a Kevyn Aucoin counter at your local Nordstrom or Neiman Marcus. (Note: Kevyn Aucoin is sold online at a number of beauty sites, from Sephora to Beautylish.)

For Beautypedia, we have chosen some of what we feel are Aucoin’s best products along with those that are OK, but for one reason or another may not be worth the expense.
