This is one of the most expensive foundations sold in department stores, and the extra expense gets you a lavish silver box (which you’ll recycle or discard) and a pretty, though standard, frosted-glass bottle that complements other makeup products in the Re-Nutriv line. But, given that none of that paraphernalia goes on your face, it is a waste and not what you should pay attention to.

The foundation itself includes an in-part titanium dioxide sunscreen, just like lots of other foundations. That’s the only anti-aging element you can count on, but it doesn’t have to cost this much. Ultimate Radiance Makeup has a slightly creamy texture reminiscent of a lightweight moisturizer. It blends easily and sets to a radiant finish suitable for normal to dry skin. Lauder salespeople like to point out that this foundation is different because it contains precious gemstones, but adding ruby, gold, or sapphire powder to makeup doesn’t bestow a special benefit on skin of any age, not to mention that the amount is so trivial as to be nothing more than a dusting. If you want gem stones to be your best friend, save your money and buy the real deal in the form of a piece of jewelry, which you can afford if you don’t buy this foundation.

The small range of shades is mostly neutral, though a few have a slightly pink cast. Although this foundation deserves a Good rating, Lauder sells other foundations that are just as good (or better) for almost one-third the price.

Note: Note: Although SPF 15 in foundation is good, the latest research suggests that products with higher SPF ratings are more desirable due to the further protection they can provide. Therefore, this foundation’s rating is due to its overall performance rather than its SPF rating. Consider layering this with another SPF product for enhanced protection.

Brand Overview

Estee Lauder At-A-Glance

The history of Estee Lauder goes back to 1946, when the woman who created the brand (and for whom it is named) began selling creams and lotions made by her chemist uncle. From its humble beginnings, Estee Lauder has grown to become a multibillion-dollar company whose products are sold all over the world and advertised in just about every fashion and women's lifestyle magazine available.

The biggest compliment we can pay to the venerable Estee Lauder line is that their moisturizers and serums can largely be described as state-of-the-art. Though fragrance is often intrusive, but when it comes to formulary excellence culminating in products that give skin what it needs to function optimally, they are tough to beat.

When it comes to makeup, by and large the brand also exceeds expectations. Though there are some under-performing products (you can read more about them in our individual reviews), Lauder has a number of excellent options, most notably its lip colors.
