Lauder's latest Re-Nutriv product has claims that may make you wonder why you bothered with their other antiwrinkle moisturizers, of which there are dozens at price points that range from acceptable to shocking. (This one falls into the shockingly overpriced category.)
What's shocking, besides the price, is that so many women keep buying, literally and figuratively, the idea that expensive skin-care products are better. It simply isn't true! There are good and bad products in all price ranges, so spending more (in this case, a lot more) does not guarantee better, younger-looking skin. Clearly, Estee Lauder doesn't believe this either; otherwise, why would they sell so many other products with the same mix of anti-aging ingredients as Re-Nutriv, except at more realistic price points?
What's so upsetting about this moisturizer isn't its formula, which is outstanding for dry skin. Rather, the unfortunate element, beyond the price, is Lauder's choice of jar packaging. The formula is loaded with light- and air-sensitive ingredients that will begin breaking down the first time you use this—talk about not getting your money's worth!
As for the claims, they're not as over the top as you may think, but even though the ingredients in this formula will make dry skin smoother, the numerous anti-aging ingredients won't hold up over the long run, so you won't see the firmer skin this promises. If smoother, softer skin with a satin glow is what you want, this product provides that—but so do many others without this one's price or packaging issues.
Note: The gold this contains may make this Re-Nutriv product seem special or exclusive, but gold isn't a good skin-care ingredient. In fact, there's no research showing it does anything for skin other than potentially cause contact dermatitis (Source: Cutis, May 2000, pages 323–326).
The fact that it's packaged in a jar means the beneficial ingredients won't remain stable once it is opened. All plant extracts, vitamins, antioxidants, and other state-of-the-art ingredients break down in the presence of air, so once a jar is opened and lets the air in, these important ingredients begin to deteriorate. The history of Estee Lauder goes back to 1946, when the woman who created the brand (and for whom it is named) began selling creams and lotions made by her chemist uncle. From its humble beginnings, Estee Lauder has grown to become a multibillion-dollar company whose products are sold all over the world and advertised in just about every fashion and women's lifestyle magazine available.
The biggest compliment we can pay to the venerable Estee Lauder line is that their moisturizers and serums can largely be described as state-of-the-art. Though fragrance is often intrusive, but when it comes to formulary excellence culminating in products that give skin what it needs to function optimally, they are tough to beat.
When it comes to makeup, by and large the brand also exceeds expectations. Though there are some under-performing products (you can read more about them in our individual reviews), Lauder has a number of excellent options, most notably its lip colors.
