You've probably seen this product from Estee Lauder advertised with a lot of fanfare – the brand claims this is the "first-ever" EE cream, jam-packed with benefits for your skin. But when you get right down to it, this doesn't offer anything unique other than the hype surrounding a new name on the ever-expanding list of "alphabet creams" such as BB and CC creams. In fact, Lauder's EE cream has some drawbacks.

Where does the "EE" in this product's name originate? Lauder says it's because this has an "Even Effect" on skintone, but that's true of most products that feature a light tint, as this one does. When it comes right down to it, this is essentially (see? Another "E!") tinted moisturizer with sunscreen, not some revolutionary product to transform your makeup routine.

This lightweight cream comes in a squeeze tube. It's easy to apply, gliding across skin and blending in readily. If this sounds like a lot of other tinted moisturizers, you're on the right track!

Now what about those claims that this can immediately minimize the appearance of dark spots, post-acne marks, redness, and pores? Unless those imperfections are barely noticeable, this won't do much to cover them up. The coverage is very sheer, lighter than most BB or CC creams, so if you have any significant brown spots or redness you will need something else to conceal them.

This comes in three shades – Light, Medium, and Deep – and all of them, because of their sheerness, are natural-looking on their intended skin tones.

As far as skincare claims for this product go, it does provide broad-spectrum sun protection with an in-part titanium dioxide sunscreen. That's good news, because sun damage is a leading cause of skin discoloration, which this cream is designed to treat. Lauder also says that sunscreen is boosted with "powerful antioxidants," and while this cream does have antioxidants (in a package that will keep them stable), they're not more powerful than other antioxidants you'll find in other products, including others from Estee Lauder. The formula is rounded out by some anti-irritants, and includes licorice extract, which studies have found can be effective in helping lighten dark spots.

One problem, though, is that this cream has a strong scent – it's apparent once you open the tube, and you can smell it for several minutes after you apply it. Though fragrance is low on the ingredient list, this does contain Narcissus tazetta bulb extract. This is a fragrant flower mainly used for its essential oil, and is likely the cause of the scent. Because it is a source of fragrance, there is also risk for irritation.

In the end, this isn't a bad product, but certainly not as revolutionary as Estee Lauder would have you believe. You can find better options on our list of Best Skin-Lightening Products or Best Tinted Moisturizers/BB Creams/CC Creams.

  • Provides reliable broad spectrum sun protection.
  • Contains some antioxidants that can boost the effectiveness of the SPF.
  • Packaged in a container that will keep its light- and air-sensitive ingredients stable.
  • Sheer formula doesn't cover, or even minimize, common imperfections.
  • Has a strong smell that lasts several minutes after application.
  • Fragrant Narcissus tazetta bulb extract poses a risk of skin irritation.

Estee Lauder At-A-Glance

The history of Estee Lauder goes back to 1946, when the woman who created the brand (and for whom it is named) began selling creams and lotions made by her chemist uncle. From its humble beginnings, Estee Lauder has grown to become a multibillion-dollar company whose products are sold all over the world and advertised in just about every fashion and women's lifestyle magazine available.

The biggest compliment we can pay to the venerable Estee Lauder line is that their moisturizers and serums can largely be described as state-of-the-art. Though fragrance is often intrusive, but when it comes to formulary excellence culminating in products that give skin what it needs to function optimally, they are tough to beat.

When it comes to makeup, by and large the brand also exceeds expectations. Though there are some under-performing products (you can read more about them in our individual reviews), Lauder has a number of excellent options, most notably its lip colors.
