Daily Hydration Moisturizer is nearly identical to e.l.f.’s Soothing Serum, save for the inclusion of small amounts of citrus and sugar cane extracts. These ingredients are typically seen in products making “natural alpha hydroxy acid/fruit acid” exfoliation claims, which e.l.f. isn’t doing. That’s good, because none of these ingredients can exfoliate skin like AHAs such as glycolic acid, so shouldn’t be relied on for this benefit.

For the money, it’s a fairly impressive formula that contains some standard hydrating ingredients alongside non-fragrant plant oils and plant-derived antioxidants—although unlike the similar Soothing Serum, Daily Hydration Moisturizer contains fragrance.

Best for normal to slightly dry or combination skin, this moisturizer contains a tiny amount of a soothing plant extract from the chamomile family. That’s nice, but we’re a bit concerned that the lemon and orange extract’s irritation potential may cancel the anti-irritant’s benefit.

All told, despite the similarity to Soothing Serum, Daily Hydration Moisturizer doesn’t get an enthusiastic recommendation.

One more comment: The “purified water” in this moisturizer is nothing special. All water used in cosmetics is purified, just like the water you drink from your home’s taps.

  • Inexpensive and generously sized.
  • Fragrance-free formula.
  • Contains some good plant oils and plant-derived antioxidants.

  • The citrus extracts can pose a risk of irritation.
  • Definitely not the last word in anti-aging, though it’s also nowhere near as pricey as many moisturizers.

e.l.f. At-A-Glance

e.l.f. (it stands for which stands for Eyes, Lips, Face) was founded by Scott Vincent Borba and Joseph Shamah. The story goes that one day Borba was shopping in a dollar store and noticed women dressed in designer clothing and sporting designer handbags loading up their baskets with inexpensive nail polish, eye pencils, and lip balm. He took note of the products being sold in such stores and quickly decided he could offer products of even higher quality at the same competitive price. His idea paid off, as e.l.f. has enjoyed continued success and increased distribution online and in retail stores.

For a line offering many products for just a dollar (OK, there are plenty that cost $3 and $5, too), there are a surprising number of hits in the mix (especially the makeup brushes). True, not everything is going to be as luxurious or innovative as some higher-end brands, but overall you're likely to be impressed with what they developed for so little money, and you may just find some beauty bargains!
