Phyto Replenish Oil is a facial oil we wish we could rate higher, because it has a unique, lightweight-yet-protective texture that drenches skin in replenishing ingredients. But like far too many facial oils, this also contains fragrance and fragrant ingredients that pose a risk of sensitizing skin. See More Info to learn why daily use of fragrant products is a bigger problem than you might think!
What saves this, at least somewhat, is that the fragrance isn't as potent as it is in many other facial oils. We're not thrilled it's there at all, but at least this doesn't come off as an oil-based perfume!
The plant oils and extracts this contains are a great source of antioxidants for skin, a benefit that complements their ability to lock in moisture and rev up skin's radiance. A few drops are all that's needed for smooth results, which makes the slightly steep price easier to accept.
Ultimately, Phyto Replenish Oil has more going for it than against it, but Dermalogica's penchant for using fragrant ingredients (natural or not, fragrance isn't doing your skin any favors) keeps this from earning a spot on our list of Best Face Oils.
Why Fragrance is a Problem for Skin: Daily use of products that contain a high amount of fragrance, whether the fragrant ingredients are synthetic or natural, causes a chronic sensitizing reaction on skin.
This leads to all kinds of problems, including disruption of skin's healthy appearance, worsening dryness, redness, depletion of vital substances in skin's surface, and generally keeps skin from looking healthy, smooth, and hydrated. Fragrance free is always the best way to go for all skin types.
A surprising fact: Even though you can't always see the negative influence of using products that contain fragrance has on skin, the damage will still be taking place even if it's not evident on the surface. Research has demonstrated that you don't always need to see or feel the effects on your skin for your skin to be suffering. This negative impact and the visible damage may not become apparent for a long time.

According to company history, Dermalogica products came into being because founder Jane Wurwand could not find a spa-oriented skin-care line that met her criteria. She was dismayed that so many skincare lines aimed at the aesthetics market had products that contained alcohol, artificial colors, fragrance, mineral oil, and lanolin, ingredients he believed had a well-documented history of problems. That's true for fragrance and alcohol (and artificial colors to a lesser extent), but mineral oil and lanolin have no documented history of causing skin problems.
The line is positioned as a no-nonsense, no frills take on skincare, with clinically-inspired packaging that does protect its beneficial ingredients from light and air. Speaking of ingredients, Dermalogica does include a lot of beneficial ones in its skincare, though there are a number of formulas in the line that also make the misstep of including potentially-irritating fragrance ingredients.
