DermaControl Moisturizer SPF 30 is said to be a 3-in-1 option for oily skin because it hydrates, protects, and controls shine. It ends up doing two of the three decently well, though on balance the formula isn't all that exciting, which is why is earns a good, three-star rating (instead of our highest, four-star rating).

This fragrance-free, light cream sunscreen is conveniently packaged in plastic container with a pump-style dispenser. The blend of absorbent and film-forming agents in this moisturizer prevent it from being hydrating, though it does have a lightweight texture and absorbent, soft matte finish those with oily skin will appreciate. It protects with an in-part avobenzone sunscreen, so critical UVA (think anti-aging) protection is assured. That's excellent because oily skin needs daily sun protection, too!

What this is missing, at least in meaningful amounts, are antioxidants and ingredients to reduce redness and calm acne-prone skin. Cetaphil included tiny amounts of vitamin E, a component of soothing licorice, anti-irritant allantoin, and zinc gluconate, but that's about it and we're concerned it's too little to make much difference— especially as Cetaphil makes a point in its advertising that this can be used to treat the redness and dryness caused by prescription acne treatments.

DermaControl Moisturizer SPF 30 is a potentially helpful option for oily, acne-prone skin and is worth a try; we only wish it had a better range and greater amounts of the kind of ingredients all skin types need to look and act younger and healthier. Still, it does a lot to earn its three-star rating, and gets a recommendation from us!

  • Fragrance-free.
  • Provides reliable broad-spectrum sun protection.
  • Lightweight, soft matte finish that's ideal for oily skin.
  • Does not hydrate as well as claimed.
  • Does not contain meaningful amounts of ingredients that can serve to soothe redness and dryness.

Brand Overview

Cetaphil At-A-Glance

This familiar, widely distributed skin-care collection is manufactured by Galderma, the same company that markets the prescription products Differin and MetroGel.  Given the dermatology heritage of Galderma, it's surprising the Cetaphil line hasn't advanced beyond the basics. Yes, most of what's available is a safe bet for those with sensitive skin!

If you're in search of simplicity, this is a good line to consider. We should note that many of the formulas omit more complex anti-aging ingredients, but they can always be used alongside a serum or treatment of your choosing.

Strengths: Inexpensive; mostly fragrance-free products; affordable and widely available; offers complete ingredient lists on its website; the sunscreens offer sufficient UVA protection.

Weaknesses:A few formulas could be updated with more complex ingredients, but forgoing that there is a lot to like here.
