Cetaphil Intensive Moisturizing Cream is positioned by the brand as an intensive moisturizer for stubborn areas of dry skin, especially on knees, elbows, and heels. We admit, those areas can get extra dry, often due to a thickened buildup of dead skin. That means a powerhouse moisturizer is in order to really heal that dry skin, but unfortunately a list of mostly lackluster ingredients means this earns an average, two-star rating.

The fragrance-free formula doesn't have the most elegant texture (it feels tacky as you massage in, rather than silky) but it does contain some reliable emollient thickeners and, as stated on the package, the emollient shea butter. We wish this contained a more sophisticated blend of repairing and antioxidant ingredients; as is, competitor CeraVe is offering body moisturizers that come much closer to state of the art than Cetaphil.

One last comment: Intensive Moisturizing Cream contains the sunscreen ingredient ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate. Why it's included (and in a relatively high amount) isn't clear, as this product doesn't make any sun protection claims. What's worth noting is that this ingredient can be a source of sensitivity for those with compromised, cracked dry skin. Because of this iffy ingredient, and the lack of more impressive skin-repairing ingredients, we recommend checking out one of the options on our list of Best Body-Care Products instead.

  • Fragrance-free.
  • Contains some proven emollient ingredients.
  • A rather basic formula.
  • Amount of sunscreen ingredient ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate could be an issue for those with compromised, sensitive skin.

Cetaphil At-A-Glance

This familiar, widely distributed skin-care collection is manufactured by Galderma, the same company that markets the prescription products Differin and MetroGel.  Given the dermatology heritage of Galderma, it's surprising the Cetaphil line hasn't advanced beyond the basics. Yes, most of what's available is a safe bet for those with sensitive skin!

If you're in search of simplicity, this is a good line to consider. We should note that many of the formulas omit more complex anti-aging ingredients, but they can always be used alongside a serum or treatment of your choosing.

Strengths: Inexpensive; mostly fragrance-free products; affordable and widely available; offers complete ingredient lists on its website; the sunscreens offer sufficient UVA protection.

Weaknesses:A few formulas could be updated with more complex ingredients, but forgoing that there is a lot to like here.
