Just about every beauty brand has a chubby lip crayon out these days so how does the Burt’s Bees version compare? In terms of pigmentation, Lip Crayon offers buildable, opaque color instead of the sheer coverage that many lip crayons have.

Lip Crayon also has a more tenacious texture that isn’t slick so the chance of the color feathering into lines around the lips is less (though not non-existent).

The shade range displays attractive hues to complement a variety of skin tones. Some go on more matte (the red-toned Napa Vineyard, for instance) while others have a subtle satin finish (the berry-hued Niagra Overlook). The Burt’s Bees Lip Crayon doesn’t feel as moisturizing as its competitors do, but the tradeoff is longer-lasting wear (although that also varies by shade, somewhere between 2-to-4 hours is typical).

All in all, if you’re looking for a chubby, retractable lip crayon with decent staying power and rich pigmentation, then this is worth checking out… just don’t expect it to be ultra-moisturizing.

Note: Lip Crayon contains rosemary leaf extract so it isn’t 100% fragrance-free, but used in the tiny concentration that it is here, the potential for irritancy is low enough to not be concerned about.

  • Tenacious texture offers longer wear than most lip crayons.
  • Pigmented shades in attractive colors.
  • Retractable, chubby pencil design for added convenience.

  • Isn’t quite fragrance-free as claimed.

Brand Overview

Strengths: Inexpensive.

Weaknesses: Many products have potent fragranced formulas; several formulas packaged in jars, which compromises their ingredients.

With humble beginnings in the town of Bangor, Maine, Burt's Bees is a brand focused on natural-themed, earth-friendly skincare. Unfortunately, in many cases, this also translates to less than beneficial formulas as not all of the natural ingredients used are helpful for skin.

Many of the plant extracts and oils used in these products, including orange oil, cinnamon oil, clove oil, lemon oil, eucalyptus oil, pine tar, alcohol, lime oil, and balsam peru, are problematic for skin and present a significant risk of irritation or a sensitizing reaction. Both the intriguing philosophy and inexpensive products are attractive, but it takes more than that to establish reliable products that are good for skin. It’s also important to consider the potential benefit (or potential harm) of the ingredients used.

There are some formulas to consider among the brand’s offerings, but some to be wary of—see our individual reviews on Burt’s Bees products for more details.
