Contouring—that is, using makeup to create more chiseled features by shading and highlighting them—is nowhere close to being a new concept, but it's having a huge moment. Australian makeup brand Becca makes it easy with its Lowlight/Highlight Perfecting Palette Pressed, and it's among the top tier of options when it comes to contouring.
Lowlight/Highlight Perfecting Palette comes in a square shaped, mirrored compact that's great for application on the go. Inside are two pressed powders: The shading Lowlight Perfector Pressed and the highlighting Shimmering Skin Perfector Pressed Opal. There's more of the Lowlight shade included than the Shimmering Skin highlighter, which makes sense as it's assumed you will be using more of that while contouring.
As far as performance is concerned, both fragrance-free powders are exemplary. Lowlight Perfector Pressed is a finely milled, matte, mid-toned neutral brown shade that applies evenly and isn't overly powdery.
The Lowlight color successfully mimics the appearance of natural shadows on the face and is surprisingly versatile, depending on how much you use. The neutral brown shade works for contouring very fair to medium deep skin tones, but we should note this is highly pigmented, so a little goes a long way. Those with very deep skin tones might find this doesn't show up as well, which is the only quibble we have with this product: It only comes in one shade combination.
The other powder included is Shimmering Skin Perfector Pressed Opal, which is a smaller version of a product Becca also sells individually. We've waxed poetic before about the virtues of Shimmering Skin Perfector Pressed (you can read the full review here), and this has all the great qualities of the larger size. The shade Opal is a pearlescent gold that adds luminosity to skin without making it appear greasy, and works well as a highlighter for fair to deep skin tones. Those with oily to combination skin will want to note, however, that like most highlighters this will make areas of oiliness more apparent.
Both powders wear well throughout a standard workday without fading and blend together for an attractive contoured look.
If you've been thinking about looking to add contouring to your makeup repertoire, Becca's Lowlight/Highlight Perfecting Palette Pressed is definitely one of the better palettes to consider because of its standout performance and versatility.

Australian import Becca is a complete line of color cosmetics from makeup artist Rebecca Morrice Williams. As the story goes, Rebecca, like so many women, was having difficulty finding the perfect foundation. It seems her professional experience making up women of varying skin tones and preferences shared one truth: all women wanted perfect skin. This set Williams on her path to creating what would become the Becca line, a makeup collection that caters well to all skin tones.
While there are a number of excellent foundations here, what seems to have catapulted the brand onto the map is their numerous highlighter products. From liquids to powders, there are an incredible range of options in their luminizer categories, and many are superb.
Surveying the rest of this line revealed that Williams not only did her homework for foundation shades, the eyeshadows are amazingly silky, and many of their products for lips and cheeks are exemplary. Lastly, almost all of the makeup brushes from Becca are aces, and the options plentiful, especially for eye designs.
Strengths: Excellent concealers, foundations, highlighters and eyeshadows; good lip gloss; several outstanding brushes.
Weaknesses: Beats us, this is a strong collection of products.
Becca is available at Sephora, Ulta and via their Web site.
