GEN NUDE Matte Liquid Lipcolor is marketed as a, "long-wearing, cream-to-matte color with a lightweight, non-tacky texture" which comes in "a playground of nude lip shades for everyone." The long-wear claim is a bit subjective, but otherwise, we're happy to report that this lip color delivers on its other promises and comes in a stunning array of expertly crafted nude matte hues!

The premise behind this collection is that there is no such thing as one-size-fits all nude lip color and we couldn't agree more. To that end, there are 20+ shades to cater to a wide range of skin tones and natural lip colors. Each goes on with rich opacity in one or two easy swipes, with a pliably creamy (but not slippery) texture that resists feathering into lip lines.

For best results, the brand recommends waiting 10 minutes before eating or drinking to allow the color to set. We agree that this recommendation helps, but even at that, this isn't as budge-proof and long-wearing as many of the top liquid matte lipsticks on the market today. Still, it definitely lasts longer than your typical cream lipstick.

The best news is that the formula looks and feels far less drying than your standard liquid matte lipstick! (Anyone who has experienced moisture-zapping liquid matte lip color knows why this is such a big deal.)

Final assessment: The gorgeous range of everyday wearable lip colors is a huge part of GEN NUDE Matte Liquid Lipcolor's appeal, and its feather-resistant wear and comfortable matte finish help seal the deal. We say, pucker up!

Note: This formula is infused with subtle vanilla flavoring.

  • Comfortable matte finish.
  • Stunning array of expertly crafted nude hues.
  • Pliably creamy (but not emollient) texture that resists feathering into lip lines.
  • Not as tenacious as the top liquid matte lipsticks out there (but wears longer than traditional cream lipstick).

Bare Escentuals At-a-Glance

Makeup is what this San Francisco-based cosmetics line is primarily about, and they use the pure and natural marketing angle to entice consumers. Founded in 1976 by Diane Ranger, who left the company in the early '90s Bare Escentuals was one of the first brands to introduce the concept of loose powder foundation. Since then, they have moved beyond it to include liquid foundations and tinted moisturizers and an ever expanding line of color cosmetics as well as skincare products.

The products are sold in most Sephora boutiques and Ulta stores, though the full selection of skincare products is most often found at the Bare Escentuals freestanding stores scattered throughout the United States.

We should note that loose powder makeup does take some practice to get the hang of—yet there is no denying that this type of foundation has its fan base. There is a lot to love about Bare Escentuals, even if mineral makeup isn’t your thing (especially their price ranges, which have remained affordable in comparison to many of their neighbors at Sephora).

Strengths: Good makeup removers; a few well-formulated powders with SPF; some nice eyeshadows and impressive mascaras; some impressive foundations; several elegant brush options; not too expensive.

Weaknesses: Some of the loose powder products have texture and finish concerns; some of the skincare contain potentially problematic ingredients.
