Alpha Skin Care's Enhanced Wrinkle Repair Cream's ingredient list is identical to its former incarnation, which was sold under the Alpha Hydrox brand as Retinol ResQ. It remains an intriguing, inexpensive way to experience the benefits of retinol plus antioxidant vitamins C and E—but the fragrance-free formula now earns middle-of-the-road status based on our more stringent criteria and what we've seen from today's top-rated retinol products, including those that have silkier, silicone-enhanced textures.

Just like its previous version (despite the branding and product name change, there's every reason to believe the formula is identical), Enhanced Wrinkle Repair Cream comes in packaging that keeps the retinol and vitamins stable. The combination of an opaque squeeze tube + narrow opening is a very good way to package retinol for maximum efficacy!

The creamy formula is preferred for normal to very dry skin not prone to breakouts. As we reported for the former Retinol ResQ product, a greater array of antioxidants plus some proven skin-repairing ingredients would propel this back to being a top pick—but we'd also add that Alpha Skin Care could've redone the base formula to create a more elegant-feeling cream instead of what amounts to a mostly water-and-wax formula.

Interestingly, Alpha Skin Care calls out the amount (0.15%) of retinol in this anti-aging product. That's nice to know, though not necessarily essential because research has shown retinol works in a range of percentages, including the amount Alpha Skin Care uses (Toxicological Research, March 2010).

Wrapping things up, Enhanced Wrinkle Repair Cream is a good but not great fragrance-free retinol product that's best for normal to very dry skin. The addition of antioxidant vitamins C and E is nice, but doesn't propel this water-and-wax-based formula to the same level as today's best retinol treatments. Still, you're getting a good amount of retinol in stable packaging for a more-than-reasonable price—so this remains a retinol product you might want to try out!

  • Contains retinol plus vitamin-based antioxidants.
  • Packaged to keep the light- and air-sensitive ingredients stable during use.
  • Inexpensive.
  • Fragrance-free formula is gentle enough to apply around the eyes.
  • A somewhat bland water-and-wax base isn't as elegant as today's best retinol treatments.
  • Lacks a mix of skin-repairing and other, newer anti-aging ingredients for added benefits.

Brand Overview

Known primarily for their well-formulated AHA products, Alpha Skin Care (formerly Alpha Hydrox) recently got an impressive image update. Along with a new name, they've also revamped their products. Although the improvements were more visual and packaging-related than formulary-driven, the fact remains that Alpha Skin Care has a formidable range of effective AHA products, all with definitively researched glycolic acid. Kudos to the company for continuing to be direct about the AHA content (and pH) of their exfoliants, something most other lines selling AHA products prefer to keep a mystery.

Should the folks behind this brand choose to go back to the drawing board once again, they would do well to reconsider their current jar packaging if they intend to keep adding antioxidants and other beneficial ingredients to their efficacious but still predominantly basic products. Until then, you can rely on Alpha Skin Care for supplying AHA products that really work, and a few other surprises too, all affordably priced and readily available.
