Brand Overview
This is a standard, rather basic moisturizer for normal to dry skin. It contains some helpful plant extracts but they will not remain stable after opening because of this product's jar packaging. See More Info for the scoop on why such packaging isn't a great idea for facial moisturizers.
The claims made for the plant Imperata cylindrica (cogon grass) are not supported by published research, so the claim that it can regulate "the moisture equilibrium of skin" is at best questionable ; we can't imagine how any plant extract could physiologically impact skin in that manner, but we digress.
At best, this will make dry skin feel smoother and softer, but so can lots of other moisturizers that cost less, have better formulas, and are packaged to keep important ingredients stable during use. See our list of Best Moisturizers for options.
- Lush, creamy formula is capable of making dry skin feel smoother and softer.
- The amount of titanium dioxide this contains can visibly brighten skin as a cosmetic benefit.
- Jar packaging isn't likely to keep this moisturizer's best ingredients (including vitamin C) stable once opened.
- The amount of wild rose oil is very low given its prominence in the name and claims.
- Contains more fragrance compounds than state of the art ingredients.
Jar Packaging: The fact that it's packaged in a jar means the beneficial ingredients won't remain stable once it is opened. All plant extracts, almost all vitamins, antioxidants, and other state-of-the-art ingredients break down in the presence of air. Therefore, once a jar is opened and lets the air in, these important ingredients begin to deteriorate. Jars also are unsanitary because you're dipping your fingers into them with each use, adding bacteria that further deteriorate the beneficial ingredients.
The vast majority of ingredients that are most beneficial for your skin are not stable in the presence of light and air, which is exactly what happens when you take the lid off a jar (Pharmacology Review, 2013 & Journal of Biophotonics, 2010).
One of the critical factors in any anti-aging or skin-healing formula is the amount and variety of antioxidants, cell-communicating ingredients, and skin-repairing ingredients, and the more the better. These function in a variety of ways to reduce the effects of the constant environmental stresses your skin experiences (Dermatology Research and Practice, 2012 & The Journal of Pathology, 2007).
Once you open that jar you bought, you immediately compromise the stability of the anti-aging superstars it contains. (You can visualize their benefits disappearing like puffs of air each time you open up that lid!)
Korres At-A-Glance
Korres is a Greek cosmetics line that was started by Athens-based pharmacist George Korres and his chemist wife, Lena. From its humble beginnings with a natural cough syrup steeped in Greek tradition to a long series of herbal remedies using local ingredients, Korres eventually morphed into a line of skincare infused with natural ingredients, a strong pull for many cosmetic consumers.
A key difference for Korres is that many of the natural ingredients they use are chosen based on the principles of homeopathy, a form of alternative medicine involving the administration of various diluted herbal tinctures to improve diseases. Unfortunately, theres very little research-based support for homeopathy as it relates to great skincare.
Overall the Korres products are a fairly even mix of pros and cons. Many of their products are tricky for us to recommend, due to the frequent presence of fragrance (a problem for skin, whether it is natural or synthetically derived) and usage of jar packaging for several of their moisturizers.
