Brand Overview

Josie Maran’s Whipped Argan Oil Body Butter Unscented feels amazing on skin, but the formula isn’t done any favors by packaging that puts many of its best ingredients at risk of breaking down.

Though this is a body butter, it has a more pliable quality than most products sold with that name; it feels more like a very thick, easily-spreadable lotion, thanks to the numerous plant oils it contains.  Though it initially feels a bit greasy, it sinks in within a minute or two.

Speaking of those plant oils, they include non-fragrant and antioxidant-rich argan, sunflower, and avocado. There’s also moisturizing shea butter and some soothing tea extracts, though they’re towards the end of the ingredient list.

One note: this contains a small amount of comfrey extract, which, while it can have skin-soothing properties, it also contains components that can also aggravate skin long-term, so it’s a factor worth considering, particularly if you have sensitive or easily reddened skin.

Our biggest issue with this body butter, though, is its jar packaging, which puts all its antioxidant and other natural ingredients at risk, since these ingredients break down in the presence of light and air (see More Info below for details).

While the aesthetics are great, you’re much better off selecting an option in better packaging from our list of best body lotions.

Pros:
  • Contains non-fragrant, antioxidant-rich plant oils.
  • Includes moisturizing shea butter and soothing tea extracts.
  • Fragrance free.
Cons:
  • Contains a small amount of comfrey extract, which can aggravate skin.
  • Packaged in a jar, meaning its beneficial ingredients are exposed to light and air.

More Info:

Jar Packaging & Beneficial Ingredients: Beneficial ingredients, which include all plant extracts, almost all vitamins, antioxidants, and other state-of-the-art ingredients, are unstable, which means they begin to break down in the presence of air. Once a jar is opened and lets air in, these important ingredients begin to deteriorate, becoming less and less effective. Routine exposure to daylight also is problematic for these ingredients.

Jar packaging is also unsanitary because you dip your fingers into the jar with each use, contaminating the product. This stresses the preservative system, leading to further deterioration of the beneficial ingredients.

Remember: The ingredients that provide the most benefit in addressing visible signs of aging must be in airtight or air-restrictive packaging to remain effective throughout usage. Buying products in this type of packaging means that the ingredients have the best chance of remaining effective—to the benefit of your skin!

Josie Maran At-A-Glance

Strengths: The sunscreens provide broad-spectrum protection; well-formulated daytime moisturizer with sunscreen; excellent tinted moisturizer for dry skin.

Weaknesses: Expensive; some products are potently fragranced.

The Josie Maran brand was founded by supermodel and former Maybelline spokesperson Josie Maran. Almost every Josie Maran product is centered on the ingredient argan oil, which the brand attributes many beneficial qualities, some of which are true, and some claims made stretch the facts a bit. According to the brand, this non-fragrant plant oil is said to do everything from reduce wrinkles to heal acne, while giving you younger-looking skin.

Argan oil does contain beneficial lipids and fatty acids for skin, as well as vitamin E and other antioxidants, but we should note that it isn't the only oil with such properties. Even more to the point, no single ingredient does it all for skin. It's just like your diet: if you eat only one type of food, you'd soon be malnourished. Skin is the body's largest organ, and it requires a variety of useful ingredients to look and function at its best.

Fortunately, the Josie Maran brand does include many beneficial ingredients in some of its best products, and does have some unique offerings to consider. It's worth pointing out also that although argan oil does have benefit for skin, its less beneficial to include it in products like eyeshadow and mascara. It does add a unique quality to some makeup, however, especially in a few of the brands lip formulas.

We should note that while the brand relies heavily on the natural theme in its marketing, it doesn't talk about the beneficial ingredients used that aren't so natural. There isn't anything wrong with using naturally-derived ingredients, but it strikes us as disingenuous to not tout the benefits of synthetic ingredients such as silicones, preservatives, coloring agents and film formers that also appear in many of Josie Maran products.

As is the case with many brands that use predominantly natural ingredients, there are some fragrant oils to be wary of, as these can be problematic for any skin type (but especially so for those with sensitivity concerns). However, there are a few products here that are absolutely worth considering and unique, see our individual reviews on the brand for more details.
