Whipped Argan Oil Body Butter Scented Versions
Josie Maran’s Whipped Argan Oil Body Butter has such a lovely, rich, highly moisturizing texture for dry to very dry skin that we’re extra-disappointed we can’t rate it better. Unfortunately, no matter which version you choose (more on that in a moment), the jar packaging won’t keep the numerous natural ingredients stable once opened, plus the majority of the scented options are strongly fragranced.
This body butter makes anti-aging claims, but in order to get those benefits from the plant-based antioxidants and oils each butter contains, opaque, airless or air-restrictive packaging is essential. A wide-mouthed jar such as what’s used for this product won’t cut it (see More Info for details).
We mentioned different versions. Maran offers several scented versions (we present four ingredient lists as part of this review) and one unscented. Interestingly, each has a slightly different ingredient list involving more than what gives the fragranced formulas their dessert-like scents. Of course, if you opt to try this, the only version we recommend is the Unscented, although it’s not an enthusiastic recommendation due to the jar packaging.
The fragranced versions are fairly potent, with each one’s scent putting skin at risk of irritation despite making your nose happy. See More Info for details on why fragrance isn’t skin care.
On skin, the ultra-creamy-bordering-on-greasy texture is super-moisturizing, leaving a sheen most will find attractive, although overdoing this makes skin slippery for longer than most people would like (for example, it can leave bed linens greasy).
Maran did a brilliant job choosing research-proven non-fragrant plant oils (argan oil leads the pack) along with plenty of good-for-skin antioxidants like shea butter, matcha, and white tea. But that only doubles down on our disappointment because in more suitable packaging--and sans fragrance--these body butters would be outstanding. Instead, we urge you to check out our list of the best body lotions.
- Very good blend of plant oils and natural antioxidants.
- Ultra-rich, spreadable texture provides intensive moisture.
- The fragranced formulas have a strong, lingering scent that risks irritating skin.
- Jar packaging won’t keep the natural ingredients stable once opened.
Jar Packaging & Anti-Aging Moisturizers: Beneficial anti-aging ingredients, which include all plant extracts, almost all vitamins, antioxidants, and other state-of-the-art ingredients, are unstable, which means they begin to break down in the presence of air. Once a jar is opened and lets air in, these important ingredients begin to deteriorate, becoming less and less effective. Routine exposure to daylight also is problematic for these ingredients.
Jar packaging is also unsanitary because you dip your fingers into the jar with each use, contaminating the product. This stresses the preservative system, leading to further deterioration of the beneficial ingredients.
Remember: The ingredients that provide the most benefit in addressing visible signs of aging must be in airtight or air-restrictive packaging to remain effective throughout usage. Buying products in this type of packaging means that the ingredients have the best chance of remaining effective—to the benefit of your skin!

Why Fragrance Is a Problem for Skin: Daily use of products that contain a high amount of fragrance, whether the fragrant ingredients are synthetic or natural, causes a chronic sensitizing reaction on skin.
This reaction in turn leads to all kinds of problems, including disrupting skin’s barrier, worsening dryness, increasing or triggering redness, depleting vital substances in skin’s surface, and generally preventing skin from looking healthy, smooth, and hydrated. Fragrance free is always the best way to go for all skin types.
A surprising fact: Even though you can’t always see or feel the negative effects of fragrant ingredients on skin, the damage will still be taking place, even if it’s not evident on the surface. Research has demonstrated that you don’t need to see or feel the effects of irritation for your skin to be suffering. Much like the effects from cumulative sun damage, the negative impact and the visible damage from fragrance may not become apparent for a long time.

Josie Maran At-A-Glance
Strengths: The sunscreens provide broad-spectrum protection; well-formulated daytime moisturizer with sunscreen; excellent tinted moisturizer for dry skin.
Weaknesses: Expensive; some products are potently fragranced.
The Josie Maran brand was founded by supermodel and former Maybelline spokesperson Josie Maran. Almost every Josie Maran product is centered on the ingredient argan oil, which the brand attributes many beneficial qualities, some of which are true, and some claims made stretch the facts a bit. According to the brand, this non-fragrant plant oil is said to do everything from reduce wrinkles to heal acne, while giving you younger-looking skin.
Argan oil does contain beneficial lipids and fatty acids for skin, as well as vitamin E and other antioxidants, but we should note that it isn't the only oil with such properties. Even more to the point, no single ingredient does it all for skin. It's just like your diet: if you eat only one type of food, you'd soon be malnourished. Skin is the body's largest organ, and it requires a variety of useful ingredients to look and function at its best.
Fortunately, the Josie Maran brand does include many beneficial ingredients in some of its best products, and does have some unique offerings to consider. It's worth pointing out also that although argan oil does have benefit for skin, its less beneficial to include it in products like eyeshadow and mascara. It does add a unique quality to some makeup, however, especially in a few of the brands lip formulas.
We should note that while the brand relies heavily on the natural theme in its marketing, it doesn't talk about the beneficial ingredients used that aren't so natural. There isn't anything wrong with using naturally-derived ingredients, but it strikes us as disingenuous to not tout the benefits of synthetic ingredients such as silicones, preservatives, coloring agents and film formers that also appear in many of Josie Maran products.
As is the case with many brands that use predominantly natural ingredients, there are some fragrant oils to be wary of, as these can be problematic for any skin type (but especially so for those with sensitivity concerns). However, there are a few products here that are absolutely worth considering and unique, see our individual reviews on the brand for more details.
