Brand Overview

Matte lips are a classic makeup look, and NYX's offering in this category has a lot going for it. There's only one small caveat, but it's not enough to keep this from consideration if you're looking for a matte lipstick that's budget-friendly.

Velvet Matte Lipstick comes in a black rubberized (NYX calls it "soft-touch") tube with a clear section in the middle where you can see the color of the lipstick within. The only drawback to this lipstick is apparent right out of the gate; instead of gliding on as claimed, it drags on initial application, though it "warms up" as you go, soon becoming smoother to apply.

The lightly fragranced formula is remarkably lightweight for a matte lipstick, and while it isn't hydrating, it's not drying at all. Even those with very dry lips will likely find this is a comfortable formula to wear.

The color is bold and while truly matte, is not flat-looking. This lipstick comes in a good range of classic shades (such as true reds, pinks, and neutrals, along with some less-traditional colors like blue and dark purple).

This wears very well and doesn't bleed, and holds up throughout the day for a good four or five hours (less of course if you have a meal) before fading to an attractive stain. While it does contain a small amount of fragrance, it isn't cloying. Overall, it's a great matte option, and the price is nice, too!

  • Lightweight, non-drying formula that feels comfortable.
  • Bold, truly matte color.
  • Doesn't bleed during its wear time.
  • Fades to an attractive stain.
  • Drags during initial application.

Smashbox At-A-Glance

This small Los Angelesbased makeup line was founded in 1999 by a woman named Toni Ko. The company's Web site is vague about Ko's background, merely stating that she developed an interest in cosmetics as a teenager and wanted to create her own line of cosmetics. Ko's goal was to produce high-quality products at affordable prices, and that's the draw of NYX (pronounced "nicks") Cosmetics. We are pleased to report that, for the most part, Ko succeeded in her childhood dream.

It is important to note that this line offers a full selection of makeup products, from foundations to lip gloss. However, the only place to access everything NYX Cosmetics has to offer is their Web site. The Ulta chain is the largest distributor of NYX Cosmetics products in the United States, and the line can also be found at Target and Nordstrom Rack, but they carry a smaller selection of NYX products. The good news is that most of the few NYX products Ulta stocks are impressive, especially the powder eyeshadows, which compete evenly with eyeshadows that cost a lot more.
