Brand Overview

Brighteners or correctors for the eye area are often disappointing. With their unusual shades of orange—or intensely shimmery finishes—they’re frequently a far cry from “natural-looking.” Becca Cosmetics has turned this tide of bland with their Under Eye Brightening Corrector, which works exceptionally well to provide “extra oomph” when used as a base for your concealer. (Or even, as we’ll discuss, on its own to brighten the eye area.)

One of the frustrations experienced when searching for a good under-eye concealer—especially if you have moderate to severe dark circles—is the difficulty of finding one that looks natural and doesn’t need to be applied thickly. That’s where this product exceeds expectations.

Applying a very sheer layer of it to the under and inner corner of the eye area does an impressive job of reducing the intensity of discolorations while giving skin a brighter appearance. This means you’ll need much less concealer and, as we found, the results tend to be far better than if you had used concealer alone.

As we mentioned above, this can also be used on its own, but most with dark circles will find this produces the best results when paired with a regular concealer. The effect is without a hint of shimmer and decidedly skin-like (think radiant, awake, yet doesn’t look at all like you’re wearing makeup).

The Under Eye Brightening Corrector sets to a satin finish, making it workable for those who have normal to dry skin around the eye area. Available in a single shade, its subtle pink hue seems to lend itself to a range of skin tones— we found it worked well for fair, medium and deeper complexions as a base for under-eye concealer.

Packaged in a pot-style container, similar to gel eyeliners, a little of this goes a long way. (A month of daily usage hardly put a dent in this product.) That’s a good thing, because this can seem on the pricey side at first glance, but it will last quite some time if you decide to try it.

Becca Cosmetics seems to offer something in the way of “radiance boosters” and illuminators for nearly every preference. Their Under Eye Brightening Corrector earned our top recommendation as it breaks from convention to deliver a totally natural-looking formula that improves the look of under eye circles and lends itself to a range of skin tones. If the idea of a “you but with more sleep” appearance appeals, we would recommend checking this out the next time you happen past your local Sephora.

Becca At-A-Glance

Australian import Becca is a complete line of color cosmetics from makeup artist Rebecca Morrice Williams. As the story goes, Rebecca, like so many women, was having difficulty finding the perfect foundation. It seems her professional experience making up women of varying skin tones and preferences shared one truth: all women wanted perfect skin. This set Williams on her path to creating what would become the Becca line, a makeup collection that caters well to all skin tones.

While there are a number of excellent foundations here, what seems to have catapulted the brand onto the map is their numerous highlighter products. From liquids to powders, there are an incredible range of options in their luminizer categories, and many are superb.

Surveying the rest of this line revealed that Williams not only did her homework for foundation shades, the eyeshadows are amazingly silky, and many of their products for lips and cheeks are exemplary. Lastly, almost all of the makeup brushes from Becca are aces, and the options plentiful, especially for eye designs.

Strengths: Excellent concealers, foundations, highlighters and eyeshadows; good lip gloss; several outstanding brushes.

Weaknesses: Beats us, this is a strong collection of products.

Becca is available at Sephora, Ulta and via their Web site.
