Ultra Overnight Scrub
This is a very standard scrub that blends plastic polyethylene beads in a thick gel base that rinses cleanly. For additional details on plastic microbeads in cosmetics, see the More Info section below. We wish clearing acne was as simple as scrubbing skin at night only to wake up with fewer pimples and redness the next morning, but it’s simply not the case—and definitely not possible with this or most other scrubs! Acne and redness cannot be scrubbed away, and acne itself has nothing to do with skin being dirty (thus needing to be “scrubbed clean”, like you’d scrub a dirty floor). What can you use to see overnight results for breakouts? A well-formulated beta hydroxy acid (BHA) exfoliant medicated with salicylic acid! If you decide to try this scrub, keeping in mind the claims won’t come true, it is best for normal to oily skin.
Plastic Microbeads in Cosmetics: This product contains polyethylene beads, which is an ingredient that has come under controversy in the recent past. In December of 2013, research published in the peer-reviewed journal, Marine Pollution Bulletin demonstrated that although polyethylene beads are non-toxic to humans, they are not filtered during sewage treatment and are accumulating in waterways. This means the beads have the potential to negatively affect marine wildlife who mistakenly consume them (Marine Pollution Bulletin, 2013).
Additional research published in December of 2013 demonstrated that polyethylene beads have the potential to absorb pollutants while in waterways. This research was conducted to establish the potential of absorption, however, and was not conducted using samples from actual waterways (Cell, 2013).
Beautypedia does not take an ideological stance in reviewing skincare products; rather, our reviews are based upon each product's potential harm or benefit to skin contingent upon what independent peer-reviewed scientific research has demonstrated. On issues like polyethylene beads in cosmetics or animal testing, we present the facts without judgment so that you may make your own decision whether or not this product is right for you.
For visibly clearer skin and reduced pimple redness overnight.
Strengths: Inexpensive; effective topical disinfectants with 10% benzoyl peroxide.
Weaknesses: As is true for most anti-acne lines, irritating ingredients with no benefit for skin take precedence; no lower-strength benzoyl peroxide products (10% has a higher chance of causing irritation than 2.5% and 5% versions).
Perhaps no other line is more synonymous with decades of zapping zits than ever-present Clearasil. The brand debuted in 1950 and was the first to offer anti-acne products to a teenage audience. The company has had several owners over the years (including Procter & Gamble), but has always kept its place on store shelves. The current selection of products is larger than in years past, yet they remain overwhelmingly disappointing because most of them contain irritating ingredients that don't help blemish- or blackhead-prone skin. Alcohol, menthol and its derivatives, and witch hazel show up repeatedly in these and other anti-acne products at the drugstore, creating a precarious situation that leaves shoppers who are dealing with acne faced with few genuinely effective choices. Luckily Clearasil comes through a few times with some very good benzoyl peroxide products for effective disinfecting.
