Brand Overview

NYX's The Natural Shadow Palette looks beautiful in its packaging, but its beauty doesn't translate to beautiful eye designs. This attractive collection of six neutral shadows in three different finishes (shimmer, matte, and satin) seems like a great idea, but in this case, trying to look natural just isn't going to happen!

Once you swipe your brush across any of the colors, you'll see the problems present themselves—these shadows are powdery to the point of being chalky. Color quality is very poor, meaning these barely show up on your skin even after multiple swipes with your brush. The powdery quality, combined with the skimpy pigmentation, means that you have to pack on these shadows to get any impact—and then, half the shadow winds up falling onto your face.

Sad to say, but this is a beauty bust, regardless of the nice price! What a shame, too, as NYX's eyeshadows are typically first-rate and rank high on our list of best buys.

  • Attractive eyeshadow colors in one sleek-looking palette.
  • Finish is overly powdery, to the point of being chalky.
  • Poor pigment quality means these shadows barely show up on the skin.
  • Tends to flake because you need to use so much shadow to get any color impact.

Smashbox At-A-Glance

This small Los Angelesbased makeup line was founded in 1999 by a woman named Toni Ko. The company's Web site is vague about Ko's background, merely stating that she developed an interest in cosmetics as a teenager and wanted to create her own line of cosmetics. Ko's goal was to produce high-quality products at affordable prices, and that's the draw of NYX (pronounced "nicks") Cosmetics. We are pleased to report that, for the most part, Ko succeeded in her childhood dream.

It is important to note that this line offers a full selection of makeup products, from foundations to lip gloss. However, the only place to access everything NYX Cosmetics has to offer is their Web site. The Ulta chain is the largest distributor of NYX Cosmetics products in the United States, and the line can also be found at Target and Nordstrom Rack, but they carry a smaller selection of NYX products. The good news is that most of the few NYX products Ulta stocks are impressive, especially the powder eyeshadows, which compete evenly with eyeshadows that cost a lot more.
