The Mattifier Shine Control Perfecting Primer + Finisher
The Mattifier Shine Control Perfecting Primer + Finisher has a lot going for it—but it's one drawback is fairly significant if you're considering this for shine control.
Best for normal to combination skin that isn't too oily, this rather thick yet silky fragrance-free primer spreads easily over skin, improving its texture and enhancing makeup application, which is the whole point of using primer.
The issue this tube-packaged primer presents is that despite its name and claims, its oil-absorbing abilities are weak. In fact, oily areas won't see the shine control last for long—expect to see oil showing through this primer (and your makeup) within an hour of applying. The finish, while exceptionally smooth, also tends to feel heavy over oily areas.
It's not all doom and gloom, though: This primer can be a very good option if your skin isn't oily; in fact, it provides enough hydration to be suitable for dry skin, especially if you pair it with a moisturizing foundation.
Going beyond primer, this formula is also worth considering because it contains an impressive mix of skin-replenishing and antioxidant ingredients. We rarely see such a range of these types of ingredients in primers, and they're a welcome addition.
In the end, only those looking for oil control are likely to be disappointed with this primer. Everyone else seeking a reliable primer that does what a primer should and supplies a nice mix of beneficial ingredients should put this on their list to check out!
- Silky-smooth texture enhances skin is easy to apply.
- Works well under makeup.
- Contains an impressive mix of hydrating and antioxidant ingredients.
- Adds a subtle, radiant glow to skin.
- Fragrance free.
- The mattifying effect is brief, and this tends to feel heavy on oily areas.
Estee Lauder At-A-Glance
The history of Estee Lauder goes back to 1946, when the woman who created the brand (and for whom it is named) began selling creams and lotions made by her chemist uncle. From its humble beginnings, Estee Lauder has grown to become a multibillion-dollar company whose products are sold all over the world and advertised in just about every fashion and women's lifestyle magazine available.
The biggest compliment we can pay to the venerable Estee Lauder line is that their moisturizers and serums can largely be described as state-of-the-art. Though fragrance is often intrusive, but when it comes to formulary excellence culminating in products that give skin what it needs to function optimally, they are tough to beat.
When it comes to makeup, by and large the brand also exceeds expectations. Though there are some under-performing products (you can read more about them in our individual reviews), Lauder has a number of excellent options, most notably its lip colors.
