Brand Overview

Kevyn Aucoin's The Gossamer Loose Powder acts as a sheer setting powder with a soft focus veil for imperfections. It's pricey, but there's no denying it gets the job done remarkably well.

One of the unique features of The Gossamer Loose Powder is the flexible silicone sifter that disperses this ultra-soft powder without making a mess. Whether you apply the powder over key areas with the included puff, or apply all over with your own brush, it's a cinch to work with and blends seamlessly.

The lightweight, soft-matte texture provides temporary shine-control yet contains ultra-fine luminescent particles that keep this powder's finish from looking chalky. The result is a surprisingly skin-like effect without looking shiny or glittery, something few loose powders pull off!

In addition to its setting power, this fragrance-free powder helps blur the appearance of imperfections, including enlarged pores (and who wouldn't want that?!)

The Gossamer Loose Powder comes in two shades: Diaphanous (translucent; workable for all skin tones) and Radiant Diaphanous (semi-translucent yellow-beige tint; ideal for medium-light to medium-deep skin tones). Each earns our top-notch recommendation for any skin type (although those needing heavy-duty shine-control will want a more absorbent formula).

  • Setting powder that also helps blur imperfections.
  • Skin-like finish in translucent shades.
  • Ultra-soft powder glides over skin like a dream.
  • Fragrance-free formula.
  • Pricey for a setting powder.

Kevyn Aucoin was arguably one of the most iconic makeup artists of the 20th century. A self-trained, highly sought celebrity makeup artist and best-selling author, his work appeared regularly in countless fashion magazines, as well as his monthly column in Allure. Not surprisingly, his work has influenced countless makeup artists and YouTube beauty vloggerswhether they know it or notand at the time of his passing in 2002, he had just launched a small range of products under the Kevyn Aucoin brand. Although Aucoin left us far too soon, at least his products serve to compliment his lasting legacy.

Today, the Kevyn Aucoin brand continues with his motto that anyone should be able to experiment with makeup and feel beautiful while doing so. The brand's range of unique products reflects the emphasis on makeups role in our lives as more than just utilitarianit should be enjoyable, accessible, fun, and the outcome always rewarding. The approach is enhancing ones self-esteem rather than using makeup to cover up what you or others might perceive as unattractive.

Thus, the products themselves are something of an experience to usefrom their packaging (beautiful) to their focus on perfecting skin and mix of basic to bold color options. This line isnt for those who think of makeup as a chore!

The price points are higher, to be sure, but there are also quite a few exceptional and unique standouts that allow this brand to nicely distinguish itself in a sea of makeup artist-fronted lines. There are some shortfalls here and there, but overall, it is a range that is well worth experimenting with should you happen upon a Kevyn Aucoin counter at your local Nordstrom or Neiman Marcus. (Note: Kevyn Aucoin is sold online at a number of beauty sites, from Sephora to Beautylish.)

For Beautypedia, we have chosen some of what we feel are Aucoins best products along with those that are OK, but for one reason or another may not be worth the expense.
