Brand Overview
While Kat Von D's Tattoo Brow isn't a permanent investment (tattoo humor!), it is a unique take on the brow filler concept. This pen-dispensed water-based pigment works well for creating both soft and bold brow looks, and its felt-tip applicator tip makes application much less tricky than some alternatives.
The packaging will be familiar to many a liquid eyeliner fan, and its flexible tip allows you brush on the brow color in short, feathery strokes. The advantage this "precision brush tip" offers is more control over placement, and the fact that the color builds slowly makes creating a softer, more natural-looking effect nearly goof-proof.
We say nearly as there will be a small learning curve for those accustomed to powder or pencil formulas. Tattoo Brow doesn't provide the same initial dense pigment of standard brow powders or pomades—you'll need to layer this if you're after a bolder brow (but if that's the look you're after, this certainly won't disappoint).
Application Note: As this is a water-based formula, its pigments won't layer well over emollient products. That means if you're prone to applying moisturizer or a creamy sunscreen over your brow area, you may want to stick to a traditional pencil or wax-based brow filler instead of a pen-style formula like Tattoo Brow.
The wear time is impressive—we found this lasted throughout the workday without fading. Though it isn't waterproof, it will hold up to perspiration and isn't prone to smudging.
Offered in three warm-toned shades (at the time of this review), "Light Blonde," "Light Brown," and "Medium Brown," this is an especially attractive lineup for those with reddish undertones to their hair color. However, those with ashy or cool-toned brows may find this lacks options for their needs.
Kat Von D's Tattoo Brow is a great choice for those interested in a natural-looking brow filler, especially one that offers a precise control over application. This would have earned our top rating, but it's a little tricky to apply (nothing stops this product's felt tip dead in its tracks like transfer from an emollient moisturizer or creamy foundation). We would say this is just shy of earning a place among our highest recommendations, and is definitely worth checking out at your local Sephora.
- Long-wearing, smudge resistant.
- Soft, natural-looking application makes creating a natural-brow look easy.
- Excellent shades for those who have warmer undertones to their brow color.
- If you get moisturizer or foundation in your brows, this won't apply over them due to its water-based formula.
Kat Von D At-A-Glance
Celebrity makeup lines are nothing newweve seen dozens of them over the yearsbut this one is a first in that it shocked us a bit. Kat Von Ds main claim to fame was her successful tattooing enterprise, and her role as a former reality TV show star. Now, she's a makeup entrepreneurand a very good one.
The line launched in 2007 with only two eyeshadow palettes, cream lipstick, and eyeliner, but since has expanded by adding several new products, including remarkable lip products, blushes and more. Just like most makeup lines, this is one to shop carefully; for every great product, there are a few that could use improvement.
All Kat Von D makeup products come packaged with the lines signature images of roses and thorns (perhaps to reinforce Von Ds love of tattoo design), which definitely makes these products stand out among a sea of blandly packaged makeup containers.
Strengths: Excellent eyeshadow palettes and trios; long-wearing cream and liquid lipstick; truly lasting powder blushes and bronzers.
Weaknesses: A few products on the pricey side (this is a minor quibble).
