Brand Overview

One person's healthy, dewy glow is another person's disco ball. Be aware that all three (spectacular) colors of PRO Glow Liquid Highlighter are extremely glittery, particularly in natural light. A little goes a long way, and while these highlighters are fun (fun, fun), there's nothing natural-looking about them. You'll make a statement whether you mix this highlighter with makeup or moisturizer for an all-over glow, wear it as a sheer, shimmering highlight, or create a bold swipe of full-on fabulous. We loved the color range: one golden, one rosy, one bronze: a deep enough shade it could double as a bronzer on certain skin tones. But, sadly, that's where our love affair ended.

This highlighter doesn't blend well, and the shimmer adheres unevenly—particularly if you've got any bumpy areas or lines. Using a blending sponge will help to even out the application, but it won't help with the transfer. Any time you touch the highlighter, you'll end up with bits of glitter on your fingertips—and glittery whatever-or-whomever-you-touch-next. Lastly, it leaves a very thin, but lasting film over your skin.

Even if you don't mind leaving bits of shimmer in your wake, or this highlighter's application challenges, no one's skin should suffer the more than five irritating fragrance ingredients in this formula. Those are a problem for every skin type, whether or not skin shows outward signs of irritation. See More Info to find out about the long-term effects of fragrance on skin.

We know the fun-factor of this luminous sparkle-fest will appeal to many; but we can't recommend this highlighter, given its shortcomings in performance and formula. Check out our list of Best Luminizers and Highlighters for other, better options.

Pros:
  • Comes in three gorgeous shades.
  • Layers well for a range of looks.
Cons:
  • Contains 5+ skin-irritating fragrance ingredients.
  • Doesn't apply or blend evenly.
  • Finish feels filmy on skin.

Why Fragrance Is a Problem for Skin: Daily use of products that contain a high amount of fragrance, whether the fragrant ingredients are synthetic or natural, causes a chronic sensitizing reaction on skin.

This reaction in turn leads to all kinds of problems, including disrupting skin's barrier, worsening dryness, increasing or triggering redness, depleting vital substances in skin's surface, and generally preventing skin from looking healthy, smooth, and hydrated. Fragrance free is always the best way to go for all skin types.

A surprising fact: Even though you can't always see or feel the negative effects of fragrant ingredients on skin, the damage will still be taking place, even if it's not evident on the surface. Research has demonstrated that you don't need to see or feel the effects of irritation for your skin to be suffering. Much like the effects from cumulative sun damage, the negative impact and the visible damage from fragrance may not become apparent for a long time.

Tarte Cosmetics At-A-Glance

Tarte Cosmetics CEO and founder Maureen Kelly started Tarte in 1999, out of a desire to create a cosmetics line that would prove that glamour can be good for you. This comes in the form of products that highlight naturally-derived ingredients in their marketing campaigns, and occasionally taking swipes at the concept of synthetics in makeup.

This is ironic, as Tarte uses more than a few beneficial synthetically derived ingredients in their formulassilicones, synthetic fragrances, preservatives and on and on. However, well forgive them that as whats ultimately important is whether their products meet your needs, and to that we can say the brand excels in many areas at what they do.

However, a few products are a bit on the pricey side and there are a few iffy shades and textures to consider among their foundationsnoted in their respective reviews. A few caveats aside, most of Tarte's foundations, blush options, eye pencils and an ever-expanding range of innovative products demonstrate that color is what they do best.
