Tarteist Lip Paint
While matte lips have been a constant in the world of makeup (with varying degrees of acceptance), they're definitely experiencing a revival. Tarte's Tarteist Lip Paint is among the growing number of products offering the newest take on the trend, the matte liquid lipstick. With one relatively minor exception, Tarteist Lip Paint knocks it out of the park performance-wise, which is why it ranks just shy of our top rating!
Tarteist Lip Paint comes in standard packaging for a liquid lip product—a clear tube with a sponge-tipped wand applicator. Though the brand says on its website that it offers a "custom precision wand," it's actually just a standard gloss applicator. It's not a bad thing, it's just not as impressive as the brand would have you think!
Hands-down, the best aspect of Tarteist Lip Paint is its texture. It's remarkably lightweight, with an almost soufflé-like consistency that glides across lips with ease. Though it's not exactly moisturizing (if you have very dry lips, we advise using a balm underneath for the moisture you need), it's not drying either, remaining creamy and pliable throughout its wear time (which is about seven hours).
As for the finish, it's a true matte, with no shimmer, sheen, or sparkle at all. The shades offered are richly pigmented and though there are bolder offerings (such as fuchsia and bright red), there are also neutral options available, meaning there's something for almost everyone. This wears well throughout a standard workday without bleeding or settling into lip lines, fading to an attractive stain towards the end of its wear time.
In fact, the only drawback to Tarteist Lip Paint is that it includes peppermint oil and the fragrance ingredients limonene and linalool toward the end of its ingredient list. The peppermint smell is apparent when you open the tube, though it fades within a couple of minutes after you apply it. There aren't enough of these ingredients to be a problem for most, but they can be potentially irritating, so the caution, though slight, is warranted.
Otherwise, Tarte's Tarteist Lip Paint is a winner in the world of liquid matte lipsticks. It's one to check out if you're attracted to—but have so far been avoiding—the look because you think matte lips might feel too drying.

Tarte Cosmetics At-A-Glance
Tarte Cosmetics CEO and founder Maureen Kelly started Tarte in 1999, out of a desire to create a cosmetics line that would prove that glamour can be good for you. This comes in the form of products that highlight naturally-derived ingredients in their marketing campaigns, and occasionally taking swipes at the concept of synthetics in makeup.
This is ironic, as Tarte uses more than a few beneficial synthetically derived ingredients in their formulassilicones, synthetic fragrances, preservatives and on and on. However, well forgive them that as whats ultimately important is whether their products meet your needs, and to that we can say the brand excels in many areas at what they do.
However, a few products are a bit on the pricey side and there are a few iffy shades and textures to consider among their foundationsnoted in their respective reviews. A few caveats aside, most of Tarte's foundations, blush options, eye pencils and an ever-expanding range of innovative products demonstrate that color is what they do best.
