Superstay Ink Crayon Lipstick
Maybelline’s Superstay Ink Crayon Lipstick has a simple but well-executed concept – just one ingredient issue keeps it from getting our top rating.
The straightforward packaging for this creamy lip product consists of a twist-up tube that’s slim enough to carry in a purse or pocket. The lipstick glides on effortlessly with saturated color from just a couple of swipes.
Those expecting an immediate matte lip might be surprised that this stays creamy and pliable for about 10 to 15 minutes after application, but it sets to an attractive demi-matte finish that’s non-drying. We found this wore well for about three or four hours without bleeding or feathering before fading to an attractive stain (less, of course, if you eat or drink while you’re wearing it).
The shades offered include everything from bright pink to true red to dusty mauve – a fairly tried-and-true range that doesn’t veer into adventurous territory, but provides solid options for most skin tones. Another note: this crayon has a built-in sharpener, which is a thoughtful touch.
The only drawback is that this has fragrance and fragrance ingredients, which results in a vanilla frosting scent common among Maybelline lip products. It doesn’t linger, fading within 20 minutes or so, but fragrance isn’t the best for skin, and that includes the delicate skin on lips.
That aside, this is a convenient and pretty way to get a matte lip that doesn’t end up in a parched look.
- Creamy formula is easy to apply.
- Saturated color in just a couple of swipes.
- Demi matte finish doesn’t feel drying.
- Wears well without feathering or bleeding.
- Offers a good range of shades.
- Contains fragrance, which can irritate skin.
Our first lipstick crayon with Lasting Ink technology glides a rich layer of matte color across the lips with effortless control that lasts for up to eight hours of wear. Keep the tip ultra-precise with the built-in sharpener, so you can easily apply your lipstick no matter where your day takes you.
Maybelline New York At-A-Glance
Strengths: At least one excellent product (if not several) in almost every category; many excellent foundations; superior mascaras; inexpensive makeup brushes; some terrific concealers, powders, blush, and lip color options.
Weaknesses: Lips balms tend to be a letdown; a few of the Great Lash mascaras are surprisingly average compared to other Maybelline formulas.
Maybelline is one of the best-known and most recognized mass-market makeup lines in the worldit's available in 90 countries. Throughout its long history, which began in 1915 when T. L. Wilson founded the company and named it after his sister, Mabel, and Vaseline (which he combined with coal dust to concoct a mascara for her), the company has prided itself on bringing innovative products to the marketplace. L'Oreal purchased the company in early 1996, and that's when things really started coming together for the Maybelline brand.
Specializing in a large selection of lipsticks, nail polishes, and mascaras, there is a lot to love from this drugstore brand. Many of their foundations are exceptional, and their powders, several mascaras, pencils, matte-finish concealers, and Superstay Lipcolor collection impressed us by offering a high degree of quality for their inexpensive price point.
Maybelline's latest urban image is a positive step, as many of their latest launches have been innovative without resorting to "been-there, done-that" gimmicks. Smart shoppers will note the similarities of a few of Maybellines formulas to products from high-end brands that are also owned by parent company LOreal. That just goes to show conscientious shopping can really save you moneywithout sacrificing quality or performance.
