Superstay Better Skin Concealer + Corrector
Maybelline's Superstay Better Skin Concealer + Corrector is a "just right" option. It's neither ultra- matte or drying, nor is it overly emollient or shiny—instead, it has a natural finish that's workable for the undereye area as well as to cover blemishes or other imperfections. In short, it's a good option if you want a liquid concealer that can fit a variety of needs!
Superstay Better Skin Concealer + Corrector's lightweight liquid-cream formula delivers medium coverage, but it can easily be layered (without looking cakey) for more intense coverage where needed. Its slanted sponge tip applicator is easy to work with whether you prefer to dab it on and blend out with your fingertips, a sponge, or a concealer brush.
We experienced only minor creasing, and overall the formula held up well through the average workday. The exceptions to this are if you have super oily skin, as the formula can end up breaking down a few hours into wear. On the flipside, if you have very dry skin (say, under the eye area), this formula won't be hydrating enough—though you can always prep the area with a moisturizer or eye cream.
As for the claims about the highly touted antioxidant "Actyl C" (which correlates to a form of vitamin C listed as 3-O-Ethyl Ascorbic Acid on the ingredient list), this ingredient wasn't included in high enough concentration to have much benefit. Don't expect it to treat "dark circles, spots and imperfections" as Maybelline states. It might help, but probably only a little.
Maybelline deserves credit for making Superstay Better Skin Concealer + Corrector fragrance-free. That's good news for all skin types, especially those with sensitive skin!
Shade-wise, there are handful of flattering options that cater to light to medium-tan to deep skin tones, most of which are neutral-toned. The finish's lack of shimmer is conducive to hiding instead of highlighting imperfections.
In the end, Maybelline's Superstay Better Skin Concealer + Corrector earns our praise for its versatility and performance. It won't be the best option for extreme skin types (very oily or dry), but is "just right" for everything in between.
- Delivers medium-to-full, buildable coverage without looking cakey.
- Natural finish is workable for the eye area as well as to cover blemishes or other imperfections.
- Fragrance-free formula holds up well on most skin types, with only minimal creasing.
- Flattering shades for light to medium-tan to deep skin tones.
- Despite claims, the formula won't treat "dark circles, spots and imperfections"; it'll just help conceal them.
Maybelline New York At-A-Glance
Strengths: At least one excellent product (if not several) in almost every category; many excellent foundations; superior mascaras; inexpensive makeup brushes; some terrific concealers, powders, blush, and lip color options.
Weaknesses: Lips balms tend to be a letdown; a few of the Great Lash mascaras are surprisingly average compared to other Maybelline formulas.
Maybelline is one of the best-known and most recognized mass-market makeup lines in the worldit's available in 90 countries. Throughout its long history, which began in 1915 when T. L. Wilson founded the company and named it after his sister, Mabel, and Vaseline (which he combined with coal dust to concoct a mascara for her), the company has prided itself on bringing innovative products to the marketplace. L'Oreal purchased the company in early 1996, and that's when things really started coming together for the Maybelline brand.
Specializing in a large selection of lipsticks, nail polishes, and mascaras, there is a lot to love from this drugstore brand. Many of their foundations are exceptional, and their powders, several mascaras, pencils, matte-finish concealers, and Superstay Lipcolor collection impressed us by offering a high degree of quality for their inexpensive price point.
Maybelline's latest urban image is a positive step, as many of their latest launches have been innovative without resorting to "been-there, done-that" gimmicks. Smart shoppers will note the similarities of a few of Maybellines formulas to products from high-end brands that are also owned by parent company LOreal. That just goes to show conscientious shopping can really save you moneywithout sacrificing quality or performance.
