Super Fan Fanned-Out Mascara
Super Fan Fanned-Out Mascara lives up to its name by delivering a defined, lengthened, fanned-out lash look, but it's not quite a slam dunk.
Among the high notes, the flexible rubber bristle brush distributes the formula evenly on lashes for appreciable length and lifted separation. It's only buildable to a minor degree (don't expect much volume), but on the plus side, clumping is nearly non-existent and we didn't experience any smudging throughout wear.
The flaking is our main issue with this mascara, and this annoyance is sort of hit or miss. If you're only wearing it for a few hours (i.e. for a night out), you'll be fine; much longer than that, you'll start to notice tiny flecks of mascara under your eyes.
The bottom line: Even though this mascara delivers a fanned-out lash look, it's not up to par with the best.
- Delivers defined, lengthened, fanned-out lashes as promised.
- Doesn't smudge.
- Fragrance free.
- Prone to flaking by day's end.
- Not as volumizing as Smashbox claims.
Two interesting things about Smashbox are that its name refers to the early, accordion-style cameras and that Smashbox is first and foremost a Hollywood-based photography studio. The company's creators, Dean and Davis Factor, have their heritage in makeuptheir great-grandfather was the legendary makeup artist Max Factor. The makeup, which debuted in 1996, began as a collection of trendy and fashion-forward colors coupled with a pleasingly neutral palette of foundations, concealers, and powders. Nowadays, there are exceptional options to choose from, but also some color products that fall short due to too sheer formulas or other issues noted in their respective reviews.
Where Smashbox has lived up to their Hollywood makeup pedigree is with a few standout formulas, including impressive lip products as well as excellent foundations, BB and CC cream options. Of course, the brand is also well-known for their range of makeup primerswhether thats a necessary step is up for debatebut nevertheless they do offer a few products in this category that are worth considering.
