Brand Overview

CeraVe Hydrating Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 30 Body is a reworking of their original pure mineral body sunscreen. Although it still provides gentle, broad-spectrum sun protection from its blend of mineral actives, it has some esthetic issues most will consider deal-breakers.

Dispensed from an opaque tube, the fragrance-free creamy formula goes beyond sun protection by replenishing skin with an effective blend of ceramides, cholesterol, and sodium hyaluronate--all ingredients typically absent from most body sunscreens.

Sadly, in this case getting those good-for-skin ingredients comes with unpleasant trade-offs like a slightly visible white cast and a lack of skin-defending antioxidants (an odd omission here given the facial version of this sunscreen contains antioxidant niacinamide.)

The research about skin needing antioxidants in the presence of UV light is crystal-clear, so using a sunscreen that lacks these vital ingredients isn’t wise. Check out these options for more well-rounded formulas.

Another issue is that this sunscreen tends to feel drying when applied to larger areas. And if you have any existing signs of dryness from the neck down, a regular body moisturizer is a must before slathering this one (but even then you may find it feels drying within an hour or two). But by far the bigger concern is that how this feels later on may keep you from applying it liberally in the first place--or from reapplying it as often as needed.

  • Gives broad-spectrum, pure mineral sun protection.
  • Gentle, fragrance-free formula.
  • Replenishes with ceramides, sodium hyaluronate, and cholesterol.
  • Leaves a slightly visible white cast.
  • Lacks skin-defending antioxidants.
  • Can feel too drying applied over large areas.

CeraVe At-A-Glance

This expanding collection of skincare products keeps things gentle and effective with fragrance-free formulas, many of which are more state-of-the-art than any other product in its price range or pricier versions at the drugstore. In short, this line is a real find!

CeraVe uses a delivery system the company refers to as Multivesicular Emulsion Technology, which releases key ingredients such as ceramides and hyaluronic acid over a period of several hours. Although this technology is undoubtedly helpful, such time-delayed delivery systems aren't unique to CeraVe, and the fact remains that most of the ingredients they use are very helpful on their own, no matter what delivery system you use.

The important point is that ongoing, consistent use of this kind of moisturizer designed to repair the skin's barrier function will result in smoother, softer, healthier skin.

It is for these reasons that most CeraVe products are definitely worth considering, especially at this price. You'll find a options for moisturizing, cleansing, broad spectrum sun protection, and baby care.
