Sumptuous Infinite Daring Length + Volume Mascara
This mascara promises long, lush, fluttery lashes and it's dual-sided, rubber bristle brush delivers, though not as cleanly as we were hoping. A few sweeps of either side of the brush (one has short, pointed bristles, the other side has longer, comb-like bristles) produces fairly dramatic length and successive coats add impressive thickness without significant clumps.
The issue, and it's one we weren't expecting given the brush design, is that the formula goes on a bit unevenly, being wetter in some places and sticking lashes together. We had to use a lash comb (not the comb part of this mascara's brush) to make lashes look evenly full. Once that was done, the result was an attractive span of lashes that resisted smearing and flaking during wear.
One other point: This mascara contains some fragrant ingredients (including phenethyl alcohol) that can make it problematic for those with extra-sensitive eyes or those dealing with allergies. Phenethyl alcohol adds a subtle rose-like scent which can be preferred to the natural smell of the waxes that form the backbone of this mascara's formula, but fragrant additives aren't the best for use in a product that's applied so close to the eyes.
- Well-designed brush adds near-instant length and successive thickness.
- Applies with minimal clumping.
- Doesn't smear or flake once set.
- Formula applies unevenly, being wet enough to stick lashes together and require extra work for a cleaner look.
- Contains fragrance ingredients that pose a risk for extra-sensitive eyes.
Estee Lauder At-A-Glance
The history of Estee Lauder goes back to 1946, when the woman who created the brand (and for whom it is named) began selling creams and lotions made by her chemist uncle. From its humble beginnings, Estee Lauder has grown to become a multibillion-dollar company whose products are sold all over the world and advertised in just about every fashion and women's lifestyle magazine available.
The biggest compliment we can pay to the venerable Estee Lauder line is that their moisturizers and serums can largely be described as state-of-the-art. Though fragrance is often intrusive, but when it comes to formulary excellence culminating in products that give skin what it needs to function optimally, they are tough to beat.
When it comes to makeup, by and large the brand also exceeds expectations. Though there are some under-performing products (you can read more about them in our individual reviews), Lauder has a number of excellent options, most notably its lip colors.
