Brand Overview

BH Cosmetics' Studio Pro Makeup Setting Spray is one of the better budget-friendly setting sprays that we've ever reviewed.

You're instructed to shake well and hold the sprayer 8-10 inches from your face to achieve a light layer of fine mist over your makeup, which is important because held any closer, you end up with large droplets that don't distribute as evenly and take longer to dry down.

At first, the spray feels slightly sticky (sort of like hairspray for your face but less intense), thanks to the film-forming agents in this formula. It's a bit of a trade-off, because what causes the sticky sensation is also what helps lock makeup in place for improved, longer wear.

Don't expect "all-day staying power" as BH Cosmetics' claim, but this spray does help makeup hold up at least somewhat better than normal.

The spray also contains a very light smattering of finely-milled sparkle that gives skin a touch of glow. It doesn't look overly shiny… in fact, you may not notice it at all, unless you look really closely in a well-lit setting.

As for the ingredients, we're pleased to see that unlike similar products, this setting spray is alcohol free; we just wish it were fragrance free, too. The rose flower water holds it back from earning our top-rated status, although it's not overly concerning considering that this is applied over a barrier of makeup, which somewhat limits contact with skin.

Other than a pinch of soothing aloe, there's not much to brag about in terms of beneficial ingredients here, but the brand isn't making any outrageous skin care claims, and we appreciate that.

The final verdict: If you want to give setting sprays a try, this is a worthy inexpensive option to consider.

  • Helps set makeup and extend foundation wear time.
  • Delivers a subtle skin-illuminating effect.
  • Keeps makeup looking fresher, longer.
  • Budget-friendly price.
  • Contains fragrant rose water, though we're not overly concerned about it for this kind of product.

The brainchild of three beauty industry insiders (including a former advertising executive) who set out to provide makeup lovers with colorful, quality products at affordable prices, BH Cosmetics got its start in Los Angeles in 2009. For the most part, the brand succeeds in this mission and has garnered a loyal following in the process.

BH Cosmetics was quick to reach out to social media stars to feature its products and the strategy has worked well; most of the brand’s notoriety is based on its presence in online reviews from influencers. But it’s more than just hype that’s put BH Cosmetics on the map: The products perform well, at prices that are budget-friendly.

For our initial reviews, we selected a handful of BH Cosmetics’ most popular products, and for the most part the news is good. Among the winners are a setting spray that skips the drying alcohol found in others, a foundation and concealer that hold up through a full day of wear and come in a good range of colors, and a brow pencil that’s a dupe for more expensive versions on the market.

Right now, BH Cosmetics is sold on the brand’s website, which also offers wholesale purchases for makeup artists, as well as at Ulta. You can learn more at https://www.bhcosmetics.com/.
