Brand Overview

This moisturizer has several great ingredients all skin types need to fight signs of aging, but its lightweight cream texture is best for normal to slightly dry or combination skin that's not too oily. The company uses a form of cell-communicating ingredient niacinamide known as myristyl nicotinate, and its benefits are identical to niacinamide, which is great. Also great is the inclusion of known and proven repairing agents plus lots of antioxidants—but then packaging brings things to a halt.

Because this moisturizer is packaged in a jar, the light- and air-sensitive ingredients it contains will begin to break down as soon as you open this, becoming less potent with each use. For what this costs, that's truly disappointing! See More Info for details on the issues jar packaging presents.

Also disappointing is the inclusion of an ingredient said to increase skin's oxygen content. Luckily, that ingredient (perfluorodecalin) can't really do that, but it can increase the oxygen content of solutions like a moisturizer. The trouble is that's not a good thing for helping skin look and act younger. That's because adding more oxygen to skin increases free-radical damage, which break down, not builds up, skin's supportive elements (collagen, elastin). The whole concept of antioxidants (which this moisturizer contains) is about thwarting free-radical damage from oxygen and other substances before they can damage skin. Knowing this, you can see how adding more oxygen to skin simply makes a persistent problem (the oxygen paradox: We need oxygen to live, yet it's also killing us) an even bigger problem.

On balance, this would earn a higher rating if not for the issues jar packaging presents. This contains the mineral pigment mica for a soft shine finish and does contain a small amount of fragrance, likely not enough to pose a risk of irritation. Still, this isn't a slam dunk and not worth considering over moisturizers in better packaging on our list of Best Products.

  • Contains a good mix of state-of-the-art anti-aging ingredients.
  • Lightweight, elegant cream texture feels great.
  • Can help firm skin and create a more even skin tone as it hydrates.
  • Expensive.
  • Jar packaging hurts the effectiveness of several of the anti-aging ingredients this contains.

The fact that this cream is packaged in a jar means the beneficial ingredients won't remain stable once it is opened. All plant extracts, vitamins, antioxidants, and most other state-of-the-art ingredients break down in the presence of air, so once a jar is opened and lets the air in these important ingredients begin to deteriorate. Jars also present a hygiene issue because even if you wash your hands or use a spatula to remove the product, you're introducing bacteria that causes further breakdown of key ingredients (Sources: Free Radical Biology and Medicine, September 2007, pages 818-829; Ageing Research Reviews, December 2007, pages 271-288; Dermatologic Therapy, September-October 2007, pages 314-321; International Journal of Pharmaceutics, June 12, 2005, pages 197-203; Pharmaceutical Development and Technology, January 2002, pages 1-32; International Society for Horticultural Science, www.actahort.org/members/showpdf?booknrarnr=778_5; and www.beautypackaging.com/articles/2007/03/airless-packaging.php).

StriVectin put itself on the skincare map with its original StriVectin-SD cream, designed to treat stretch marks. The product took off and became the cornerstone of skincare collection whose focus is now on anti-aging. Its main selling point is its use of myristyl nicotinate (called NIA-114 in brand literature), which is related to and has many of the same properties as niacinamide.

Overall, the brand has some worthwhile products and for the most part theyre in packaging that will protect their ingredients from light and air. Unfortunately there are a number of options that include fragrance and other potential irritants, which are noted in our individual reviews.

As of 2019, StriVectin no longer sells in mainland China and is now cruelty-free. For more information about StriVectin, visit www.strivectin.com.
