Squalane + Probiotic Gel Moisturizer
Squalane + Probiotic Gel Moisturizer from Biossance loses points right off the bat due to its jar packaging. Because antioxidants and probiotics are sensitive to air and light, every time you open up the jar, it compromises the stability of these beneficial ingredients, rendering the formula less effective with each use. (See More Info for the in-depth explanation.)
In essence, the namesake ingredients you’re paying for are shortchanged in this type of packaging. However, squalene gets a slight pass because it’s less prone to breaking down in the presence of air than some other types antioxidants.
Otherwise, this fragrance-free moisturizer delivers in terms of weightless hydration, thanks to the combination of glycerin and dimethicone plus emollient squalane, all of which are well-researched ingredients for preventing moisture loss and softening dry, rough skin. We also appreciate how the light gel texture absorbs quickly and sets to an imperceptible, non-greasy finish—a plus for oily/combination skin.
But in the end, your skin deserves better. Peruse our top-rated moisturizers for formulas that come in effective packaging and really deliver benefits over the long haul.

Biossance is the commercial beauty arm of biotechnology brand Amyris. Amyris manufactures plant sugars (like that from sugar cane) into specialty ingredients for use by other companies, but chose to center Biossance around one ingredient in particular: plant-based squalane.
Each Biossance product prominently features squalane; so much that it’s in the name of every offering. Squalane has its merits—it’s an excellent skin-conditioning ingredient and has antioxidant properties—but skin needs much more than one focused ingredient to feel, look, and perform its best.
Thankfully, Biossance includes other ingredients in many of its squalane-centric products and these are also impressive, particularly bakuchiol (which has many retinol-like properties), antioxidants, and peptides. Unfortunately, the brand also uses a number of fragrance ingredients in many of its products, and whether naturally-derived or not, fragrance is known to irritate skin—even if you don’t see or feel the damage taking place. For this reason, most of the brand’s offerings wind up being middle-of-the-road, though there are a couple of standouts.
