SPF 50 Protective Face Base
This daytime moisturizer with sunscreen is capable of providing broad spectrum sun protection that includes stabilized avobenzone for UVA (think anti-aging) screening, and it's formulated in a lightweight but moisturizing thin lotion base best for normal to dry skin.
Although the formula contains a decent mix of antioxidants and a few other beneficial ingredients, it also contains fragrant geranium and lavender oils, the latter of which can pose serious problems for skin as detailed in the More Info section. Geranium oil has antibacterial activity, but also contains fragrance components (such as citronellol and geraniol) known to irritate skin. Because the active ingredients in this sunscreen can be sensitizing for some people (more so when applied around the eyes) we're unwilling to recommend this product when there are so many others that can provide the same level of moisture plus sun protection without the potential risk of irritation from fragrance ingredients (and no question, this product has a strong scent).
- Provides broad-spectrum sun protection.
- Lightweight yet moisturizing formula.
- Contains a decent mix of antioxidants.
- Contains lavender and geranium oils, both of which pose a risk of irritation.
- Contains fragrance ingredients (such as citronellol) that can irritate skin.
Research indicates that components of lavender, specifically linalool, can be cytotoxic, which means that topical application causes skin-cell death (Source: Cell Proliferation, June 2004, pages 221–229). Lavender leaves contain camphor, which is a known skin irritant. Because the fragrance constituents in lavender oil oxidize when exposed to air, lavender oil is a pro-oxidant, and this enhanced oxidation increases its irritancy on skin (Source: Contact Dermatitis, September 2008, pages 143–150). Lavender oil is the most potent form, and even small amounts of it (0.25% or less) are problematic. Although it's fine as an aromatherapy agent for inhalation or relaxation, it is a must to avoid in skin-care products. (Sources: Psychiatry Research, February 2007, pages 89–96; and www.naturaldatabase.com).
Lightweight, high-performance lotion provides a high level of broad spectrum UVA and UVB protection to prevent signs of premature aging, dark spot formation and sun burn. The fast absorbing formula delivers a boost of hydration to smooth and plump skin and works well with any skincare and makeup regimen.
Bobbi Brown At-A-Glance
Strengths: A good cleanser and eye makeup removers; some impressive foundations, with options for all skin types and preferences; very good blushes and eyeshadows (powder and cream); several top-notch mascaras; mostly excellent brushes.
Weaknesses: Multiple moisturizers in jar packaging, otherwise great products hindered with irritating fragrant oils or fragrance components.
It all began with lipsticks. In 1991, New York based makeup artist Bobbi Brown debuted a collection of ten lipsticks at Bergdorf Goodman, expecting to sell about one hundred units in a month. She sold more than that the first day. From there, it's been mostly success after success, as Brown launched her classic foundation stick, wrote her first book, Bobbi Brown Beauty The Ultimate Beauty Resource, and enjoyed continued attention as an in-demand makeup artist and beauty educator.
Today, Bobbi Brown's makeup that continues to excel with superior foundations, true matte blushes and eyeshadows, and with all of the other basics that are essential to anyones makeup wardrobe. It isn't the least bit surprising that this makeup collection continues to do so well, because for many it's one-stop shopping that combines classic makeup application techniques with enough fun-yet-functional products to keep customer's interest piqued season to season.
Turning to the skincare collection, there are a few excellent formulas, but unfortunately, many are packaged in a jar, which means their beneficial ingredients are rendered useless due to air exposure (and bacterial contamination from spatulas or fingers). In addition, some suffer from the inclusion of potent fragrant essential oils. Those that should be avoided are noted in their respective reviews. That aside, color is without a doubt Bobbi Brown's strong pointbut you will find a few sleeper hits among the selection of skincare products.
